Behind UP's shield and wings is an orange and yellow heart, with the pink and green bands wrapping around the base from the sides of the nose. Overall, a pretty creative design to be sure! UP painted this SD70M in a special scheme referred to as the "We Are ONE" scheme. The scheme includes the nine Employee Resource Groups that Union Pacific offers for its employees. The first such group, the Black Employee Network (or BEN) was created in 1979, indicating the reason for the number of the unit. UP 1979 is an SD70M painted in the "We Are ONE" scheme. UP created the unit as a unifying unit amongst UP employees. It highlights all of the Employee Resource Groups UP has. The first such group was the Black Employees Network (called "BEN"). That group was created in 1979, hence the number choice for the unit. The train made the trip here from North Platte, NE today. It will sit in the yard overnight. The Colorado Springs Utility coal train sits on Yard Track 1, awaiting for a crew. Once it gets a crew, it will depart on the Belt Industrial Lead and head to the Greeley Sub and north to the Powder River Basin. This, along with Roper in Salt Lake, was Rio Grande’s main classification yard. Under SP, the yard was packed full still as many trains ran on the Moffat from the Pacific Northwest to Texas. About four years after that merger, UP 4395 was delivered as part of 1,000 unit order of SD70Ms. Crazy to think it has been nearly 24 years since UP and SP merged. It is, perhaps, somewhat ironic that exactly 14 years ago that UP 1989, the Rio Grande Heritage Unit, sat a few hundred yards from this location under a tarp, waiting to be unveiled! North Yard has far more yard tracks open than it has filled right now. One of the tracks (the one that is mostly tank cars with some white covered hoppers at the end) is the end of a train. The relative lack of cars in the parking lot at the yard office is an indication of the slim economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
