It then went to the Rio Grande, followed by Southern Pacific, and now, Union Pacific. There are around 25 yard tracks in North Yard. As you can see, there are cars on most of the tracks, although many of the tracks are not particularly full. If you note the light blue building in the distance (with one white door and one blue door)...this was the car repair facility (called the RIP facility - Repair In Place). On December 5, 2023, UP management decided to close the shop. 13 car repairmen were immediately laid off and escorted off the property! No more car repair facilities in Denver. In a few minutes, the crew will cut the power away from the train and take the units over to the fuel tracks. It one of the tallest buildings in the area, and is well-known by railfans in the Denver area as it is a clear landmark for North Yard. It rather appears that there is a lot of power on the point of the Rocky Mountaineer. In reality, the Mountaineer is back a bit and three light units are coming in to North Yard off the Belt Lead. The third unit from the head end was not needed for the journey east on the plains, so the outbound crew (new crew that got on in Denver for the journey east) had to cut the power off and back down the Belt in to North Yard to drop off the third unit. Today, the Belt and North Yard are, of course, owned by UP. The Rocky Mountaineer, is a rare move, is backing off the Belt Line and in to North Yard so it can depart west toward the Moffat on Main 3. Typically, the train would just cross Bypass 1 or 2 westbound, but both Bypass tracks were blocked, necessitating the rare move. UP 1997 and UP 1980 are both SD40-2s, UP 4553 is an SD70M, and BNSF 7638 is ES44DC. The mix of newer and older power, along with a foreign unit (BNSF) is what makes this consist somewhat unusual.
