This GP40N has a fairly interesting history. It was delivered as a GP40 (not a GP40-2) to Baltimore and Ohio in November 1966 as B&O 3692. It was briefly on the Chessie roster after the B&O and C&O merger, and then wound up on the CSX roster as CSX 6508. CSX then sold the unit to Espee and it changed colors and roster number, becoming SP 7114. Now, it has found new life as it has been rebuilt to GP40-2 specifications, designated as a GP40N.

Long gone are the days of switch engines, such as the SW1000 and SW1200. For several decades, units like this (former) GP38-2 are now used in switching and local service. UP 801 was originally built as MP 2301. UP has been rebuilding many older units, but this unit has not yet undergone the the rebuild program.

UP 688, originally MP 2188, was delivered to Missouri Pacific in February 1980 as a GP38-2. Note the lack of dynamic brakes, a feature not uncommon on Missouri Pacific units. UP recently rebuilt the unit, giving it new life, and it is now designated as a GP38N.

A couple decades ago, UP had so many units on the roster that they were in danger of running out of 4-digit numbers. Thus, they came up with a new reporting mark: UPY. It stands for "Union Pacific Yard Units". One example is this GP15-1, numbered UPY 618. It was originally a Missouri Pacific unit, delivered in September 1979.

A single SD40-2 sits outside the north end of the North Yard engine shop. UP has moved virtually all maintenance to North Platte, NE, so only the most basic maintenance is now conducted here in Denver.

There is a smattering of power hanging out in North Yard this morning. A fairly common view for 2025, all-in-all. Off in the distance on the switch lead is a remote switching job.

Not sure if it is just due the time of year, coming up on Christmas and New Year's, but North Yard is relatively empty at the moment! Most tracks are not anywhere near full, and several tracks are completely empty.

A look at the power currently hanging out around North Yard. Power in the foreground and to the right is for switching and local duties. In the middle, the power is being serviced at the fuel tracks. Off in the distance, several units are ready for assignment on the ready track.

UP 1957 is one of two SD40Ns (rebuilt SD40-2s) that are currently serving as switch engines in North Yard. The units are both remote control enabled. A single crew member can throw switches in the yard and operate the train from a remote control box. A couple of panels are open on the long hood, and you can see a bit of the prime mover.

When it comes to older power, only about one third of UP's units were originally delivered as Union Pacific. The other two thirds are a mix of Missouri Pacific, MKT, Southern Pacific, and Rio Grande. UP 1482 was SP 7112 when it was absorbed into UP's roster. However, in this case, it was second hand to SP as well. It was delivered in March 1969 as B&O 3721.

I have seen some tagging done to locomotives before, but this might just be the worse case of graffiti that I've seen on a single unit. The good news is that the unit will likely wind up in North Little Rock in the not-too-distant future for a rebuilt and a repaint.

A former Missouri Pacific GP38-2 sits in North Yard. The unit is likely used either for switching on yard jobs, or on locals. The unit was delivered to Missouri Pacific as MP 2237 in August 1980.

This former AC4400CW has been rebuilt as a C44ACM. Most of the Class 1 railroads are creating or expanding rebuild programs to bring new life to older units. This is largely due to the United States EPA Tier 4 emissions standards, which has increased both the up front cost and maintenance cost of brand new units.

Amongst some other units that have fueled and serviced and are awaiting their next assignment is UP 4548 and UP 4055. Two of the 1000 SD70Ms ordered by UP (in a single order) around 2000.
