This is because #6 (the eastbound Zephyr) is the only one of the two Zephyr's to use it. And it is typically well past nightfall by the time it is using it. But arriving 45 minutes early was key in helping me get this shot! The Zephyr is backing down the lead into Union Station. The cab perhaps? You'd be correct! This is one of only five such units built and sent to Burlington Northern. The GP50 is equipped with a "crew cab" that can comfortably seat five crew members. The GE ES44AC is becoming more and more prevalent on coal trains everywhere. Quite the change from five years ago when SD70MACs ruled all BNSF coal trains. Actually, while it still looks like an SD45-2 on the outside, the insides have been completely "revamped" and it is now an SD40-2 under the hood. A 16-cylinder engine and 3,000 horsepower. Amtrak received several of these units for use (as the name implies) in California. It is a rare find to find one of these outside that west coast state.
