One of the switch jobs that works out of 31st Street is the Salt Mine...it is so named as you might expect. Because everybody goes to work in the "salt mines"! The power on this day was very unique. Two former Santa Fe units - a GP60M and a B40-8 - work the switch job.

Some colorful power on the daily ZDENCHI (Z-Train, Denver to Chicago) as the trains comes around the wye out of Rennicks and heads east toward the Brush Sub. Looks like the well cars at the front of the train have had some "Urban Art" applied...ugh...

Making its way north through Colorado, a 6,000+ foot "Earthworm" (a fancy way of saying unit grain train) makes its way past the house (BNSF engine facility) toward the main at 31st Street. This particular train just passed straight through and headed north on the Brush Sub.

Several units sit outside BNSF's engine shop (the "house") in Denver. On the left there is an SD40-2 and a GP10 (an interesting pairing). To the right, there is a C44-9W, a GP60B, and a white KCS SD40-2!

Of the many great things about the Warbonnet paint scheme, the highly reflective silver works very well in morning light. For a time, BNSF actually painted newly received C44-9Ws in the Warbonnet scheme, before dropping it entirely in favor of the Heritage 2.

One of only four remaining GP10s (at the time of the photo) was calling Denver home for awhile! The cab almost has an Alco look to it, which is one of the things that identifies the unit as a GP10 and not a low-nose GP7 or GP9.

Looks like BNSF is starting to patch the few-remaining BN units with the New Image herald on the cab. Keeping with tradition, BNSF matches the color of the unit for the patch (whereas UP just throws a yellow sticker on the cab).

At first glance, there may not be a lot that is particularly interesting in this shot. However, the reason I snapped this one is because of the paint schemes. It is the first and (as of the time of the shot), the only picture I have with BNSF's Heritage, Heritage 2, and New Image scheme all in the same shot.

Some colorful power was found on BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest on this particular morning. There is a good representation of east roads to go along with the BNSF leader! The CSX unit is an ES44DC and the Norfolk Southern unit is an SD60.

An interesting mix of paint schemes for the year 2007. On the left, Kansas City Southern's white paint scheme (now retired). On the right, of course, is Santa Fe's Warbonnet. Not a bad mix between the two of them, really!

There aren't many white Kansas City Southern units left in the world. This was always my personal favorite scheme for the railroad, so I was happy to come across this SD40-2, even if it is looking a little bit shoddy!

There aren't a lot of GP35's left in the world, particularly on Class 1 railroads. Indeed, these were some of the first units to fall of Rio Grande's roster toward the end of its life in the mid-to-late 1980's. A fair number, however, have survived to continue in switching service on BNSF's roster.

The paint scheme applied to the demo GP60s and SD60s that EMD produced has always been one of my favorites. A very close second (seeing as how it is almost identical) is the scheme worn by the 100 leaser units from Oakway. I'm a sucker for a shot of one of these SD60s anytime!

Warbonnets are becoming harder and harder to find as more and more units are being repainted in the New Image paint scheme. Even though its paint isn't quite as stunning as when it was first new, BNSF 791 is still well worth the shot.

While the GP60 is one of my favorite units of all-time, I really don't care much for the GP60M. Something about the wide cab on the short frame of a four axle unit just doesn't look quite right!
