This eastbound coal load has the typical power configuration that UP has used on coal loads on the Moffat for years. In addition to the two units on the point and one on the rear, there are three mid-train DPUs assisting in the run. These three units were be cut out once the train reaches Denver, and the train will continue with just a 2x1 configuration.

An eastbound BNSF coal load cuts through the middle of Arvada, a relatively quiet suburb of Denver. For those not from the area, Arvada was designed from the start as a residential city. The town of roughly 120,000 people has zero industrial zones and only light commercial aside from the residential. Makes for a fairly quiet and nice place to live.

In the middle of Arvada, just north of the intersection of 66th Avenue and Oberon, there is a rather secluded lake called Oberon Lake One. Driving on Oberon Road, you wouldn't know it was there as the fill the tracks run on blocks the view of the lake. However, from a slightly elevated vantage point, you can clearly see the lake, as can passengers aboard this evening's eastbound Zephyr.

Now that we are in to the summer season, the California Zephyr is back up to nine Superliners. The number of Superliners typically ranges from seven in winter months to nine in summer months as business fluctuates. The train is approaching the 66th Avenue grade crossing in Arvada here.

Due to the fact that the power for the Ski Train must run around the train at Fraser, the "Bloody Nose" Heritage Unit only leads the train twice each weekend (once west and once east). For January, it will lead east on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings. Here, it has the train rolling along on the approach to 66th Avenue in Arvada on a Sunday morning.

As is typically the case with eastbound coal loads, a single unit brings up the tail end. The train will take Bypass 2 in Denver and the three mid-train swing helpers will be cut out. A new crew will be called, and will take the train east on the KP and on to the great plains.

The City of Arvada has been working to convert most of the grade crossing the Moffat intersects with to be "quiet zones". The grade crossing at 66th Avenue now has quad crossing, but is not quite yet a quiet zone as testing is still ongoing with the crossing and surrounding stoplights. Mid-train swing helpers rolling through the quad crossing on the way to Denver.

The city of Arvada installed "quiet zones" at four grade crossing a couple of years ago. Now, they are working on installing a few more. However, these quiet zones will have a different configuration. The existing zones utilize a raised median on the road to prevent cars from driving around the lowered crossing arms. The new zones will simply have "quad gates", so both lanes of traffic (in both directions) are blocked. You can see the new crossing in the process of being installed as the MRONY rolls east.

As part of the Boy Scouts 100th Anniversary unit, UP applied multiple decals relating to Boy Scouts. The Boy Scout emblem is on the right side of the picture. Logos for Cub Scouts, Webelos, the ranks of Boy Scouts (Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, 1st Class, Star, Life, and Eagle), as well as a decal honoring 100 years in scouting.

Only about seven miles left in the journey for this eastbound MRONY. The train left Roper Yard the day before. 18 hours seems to be a fairly typical travel time for UP's manifests between Denver and Salt Lake City. UP 2010 leads the train as it approaching the 66th Avenue grade crossing.
