Thanks to the short days of winter, it is only noon and yet already feels like the sun is getting close to the western horizon! A loaded BNSF coal train leaves out of the east end of Eisele (Clay) on the approach to Big Ten.

Along the straight southern edge of the ridge leading up to Big Ten Curve, a trio of units lead an eastbound BNSF coal load toward Denver. From there, the train will continue south on the Joint Line.

An ES44AC and an SD70ACe bring up the tail end of this BNSF coal load. The train loaded in Utah and is now headed east to Denver before turning south and heading down the Joint Line.

The head end of this BNSF coal load has entered the main at Rocky as a pair of DPUs bring the tail end around the northeast edge of Big Ten Curve. The train met the BNSF Denver-Provo at Rollins earlier in the afternoon.

A single car is stopped at the 72nd Avenue grade crossing in Arvada, just east of Leyden. This grade crossing will no longer be here in roughly two years when the City of Arvada widens 72nd Avenue to four lanes and drops the road beneath the tracks here. For now, however, an eastbound BNSF coal load crosses the road at grade, as thousands of trains before it have done.

BNSF 6271, leading an eastbound coal load, pass by an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at MP 9.7, right alongside Kipling Street. The train will head down Main 1 at Arvada, then cross over to Main 3 at Pecos and run down the main along North Yard to Fox Junction, where it will get lights over to the Joint Line.

An eastbound BNSF coal load passes by the relatively well-hidden Oberon Lake (Number 1) as it rolls east toward Denver. The tracks are raised on a bit of a fill here, making it impossible to see the lake from Oberon Road, which parallels the tracks, but lower by several feet.

An eastbound BNSF coal load cuts through the middle of Arvada, a relatively quiet suburb of Denver. For those not from the area, Arvada was designed from the start as a residential city. The town of roughly 120,000 people has zero industrial zones and only light commercial aside from the residential. Makes for a fairly quiet and nice place to live.

The two DPUs bringing up the end of this eastbound coal load pass by the now-red intermediate signal at MP 9.8. Momentarily, the line of cars will be free to continue on their way along Kipling Street and Oberon Road.
