Yard Shots Union Pacific
Crossing over Bailey Yard and looking west, we see the east classification yard as well as three through tracks. On the right side of the frame, the westbound through tracks have quite a few trains ready to go. For aviation fans, my Cessna 172 is currently configured for "slow flight", with the flaps down to reduce my airspeed for better viewing.

Dozens of tracks make up the east hump yard here at Bailey Yard in North Platte. You can see the locomotive maintenance facility on the left side of the shot. In the distance near the top of the frame, you can see the westbound run through tracks and the "spare yard". The spare yard alone has almost as many tracks as North Yard in Denver.

One of the cool features of Bailey Yard is the Golden Spike Tower. This is an observation deck that was built by Union Pacific that serves as both museum and viewing area of the yard. If you are ever in North Platte, it is worth a visit.

Forgive the somewhat low resolution of this picture. It is a cropped shot from my iPhone 15 from above Bailey Yard. I noticed two of UP's six heritage units, UP 1989 (the Rio Grande unit) and UP 1988 (the Katy unit) are both at the facility. Not sure if they are waiting for repairs, or have just been released.

From the south side of Bailey Yard, you can see dozens of engines waiting for, or having just been repaired, at the locomotive facility. On the other side the maintenance facility is the east hump yard, filled with cars waiting to be added to new eastbound trains.

Tracks at the bottom of this shot make up the eastbound receiving yard. Manifest trains that need to be broken up and sorted enter this yard. Their cars are then sent over the east hump and enter the east hump yard. Cars are then pulled out of that yard and trains are built in the east departure yard in the top right part of the picture. The westbound counterparts are visible to the top left.

In this shot of Bailey Yard, you can see the east hump yard taking up the main part of the shot. The west hump yard, which sort all railcars heading west, is partly cutoff in the upper west side of the shot. The handful of tracks in the center are through tracks, used mainly for intermodal trains that are not stopping in North Platte.

From the north side of Bailey Yard, we look across the east hump yard and the engine facility. Any railcars come from the west are sorted in the east yard for eastbound trains.

An overview of UP's Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE. This is the largest rail classification yard in the world! The yard encompasses 2,850 acres, has two separate hump yards, totaling 114 yard tracks. The yard handles roughly 14,000 rail cars daily. It is also the location of one of the largest engine facilities, and also has a car repair facility that replaces 10,000 pairs of wheels annually. In this shot, you can see the west hump yard in the foreground and the east hump yard in the background.
