The westbound Zephyr departed Fort Morgan about 30 minutes late, but will make up that time and more by the time it reaches Denver. Right now, at 7:07am, the train passes by Barr Lake on a brilliant, clear 4th of July morning.

While double stack intermodal trains are a "dime a dozen" on lines like the Transcon and the Overland, they are far less common in the Denver-Metro area. Indeed, they are probably one of the least photographed types of trains I have. However, BNSF does run a Z-Train between Denver and Chicago (and back) six days a week. The eastbound version typically departs Denver shortly after sunrise in the summer months. Here, an ES44C4 and a pair of C44-9Ws lead the hot shot east by the glass reflection of Barr Lake.

BNSF 6017, one of several BNSF units being painted in a commemorative 25th Anniversary scheme, leads a westbound loaded coal train by the (extremely low leveled) Barr Lake.

The hottest train in Colorado, the ZDENCHI (Denver to Chicago) crosses the fill along Barr Lake after meeting the Zephyr at the siding of Barr. The dispatcher had a great meet set up, and the Z-Train was stopped for less than 15 minutes. I love this perspective as you get water, the plains, and mountains all in the scene.

As the westbound Zephyr skirts the western edge of Barr Lake, several birds fly along the surface of the water and away from the rapidly-moving passenger train. In the distance, you can see Longs Peak, one of Colorado's numerous 14-ers, standing tall in the morning sun.

The westbound Zephyr creates a nice silhouette against the morning sun at Barr Lake. The train is running about 1 hour and 15 minutes behind schedule this morning.

Following not too far behind the eastbound Zephyr, this coal empty is moving at track speed, as you can deduce from the slight blur of the lead engine! A few people are enjoying a quite June evening in a boat on Barr Lake in the distance.

For much of the year, the eastbound Zephyr departs Denver after dark. However, in the summer months, there is still a bit of light when it heads east. Here, just days before the official start of summer, the Chicago-bound train is right on time as it passes by Barr Lake, about 18 miles east of Denver Union Station.
