Indeed, they are probably one of the least photographed types of trains I have. However, BNSF does run a Z-Train between Denver and Chicago (and back) six days a week. The eastbound version typically departs Denver shortly after sunrise in the summer months. Here, an ES44C4 and a pair of C44-9Ws lead the hot shot east by the glass reflection of Barr Lake. The dispatcher had a great meet set up, and the Z-Train was stopped for less than 15 minutes. I love this perspective as you get water, the plains, and mountains all in the scene. However, in the summer months, there is still a bit of light when it heads east. Here, just days before the official start of summer, the Chicago-bound train is right on time as it passes by Barr Lake, about 18 miles east of Denver Union Station.
