A look at the north side of burned down Building #3. You can see that on the north side of the building, there was a "trench" that ran beneath one of the tracks for maintenance on the under side of cars.

The north face of the main shops at Burnham, now quiet from activity for nearly eight years. All of the rails at Burnham were pulled up and repurposed by Union Pacific.

Since UP closed the shops at Burnham, private security has been on the premises, ostensibly to protect the property from vandals. Despite the private security, graffiti "artists" have managed to do quite a job on the buildings on the property. Including the "Graffiti Kings" tag along the top of the building.

One of the pieces of machinery that was located at Burnham was a transfer crane that ran on rails. Most of the relevant parts have been auctioned off, but the piece of the crane that spans the ground between the rails still remains. (I am not a crane expert, so feel free to leave a comment with more information, should you have it!)

Rio Grande's (and later SP and UP's) Burnham shops were located quite close to Denver. UP closed the shop on February 14, 2016. Rumor has it that in 1996, UP made a deal with then Colorado governor Roy Romer, agreeing to keep the shop open for 20 years in exchange for Colorado not objecting to UP mothballing Tennessee Pass the following year in 1997.

The shops had a turntable that was still in use right up until the shops closed. The shops predate the 8th Avenue viaduct which, when built, had to be built around the south end of the main shops.

An overview of the main shop at Burnham. This is where, until February 14, 2016, UP made major repairs to diesel units in Denver. Prior to UP, SP and (of course) Rio Grande carried out maintenance here. After closing the shop, units in need of maintenance in Denver must go to North Platte, NE.

Building #3 at the (former) Burnham Shops in Denver used to have 10 stalls, and was used for maintenance. In the summer of 2021, the building caught fire and burned completely to the ground. Since UP had already removed all the equipment from the property it cared about, little was done for the old building, other than putting the flames out.

After UP abandoned the Burnham Shops in Denver, in the summer of 2021, Building #3, which housed some maintenance equipment, completely burned to the ground. The stalls for the shop used to be accessed by a transfer table, now long since removed.

The average motorist no doubt was unaware of the awesome event they were witnessing as this steam crane rolls across Shoshone Street, coming out of Burnham for the last time.

At least three pieces of old Rio Grande equipment will be salvaged from Burnham. The rest may be torched and scrapped, but DRGW 3006, DRGW 01447, and this Steam Crane will all find homes and will be preserved for the future!

Just before 4:20pm on February 17, 2018, DRGW 3006 was the last engine to leave the property of Burnham! Seems entirely appropriate that a Rio Grande GP30 would be the final unit to leave the close yard.
