At the west switch of Leyden, the MNYRO is backing into the clear in the siding to allow Amtrak to continue west. The MNYRO kept losing communication with its tail end DPU units, causing the train to go into emergency. These problems took so much time, that the crew on board will actually get relieved right here at Leyden! A new crew will bring out a new unit to put on the head end to resolve the communication issues.

After losing communication with these two DPU units, the MNYRO went into emergency west of Leyden. After an hour of checking, the crew is now backing the track down the mainline and into the siding at Leyden. The train is about to cross over Indiana Avenue.

The westbound California Zephyr got into Denver 2 hours and 42 minutes late due to bad weather in the midwest. Unfortunately, it only got 13 miles west of Union Station before betting stopped for another 90 minutes! The Zephyr is stopped here on the mainline at Leyden due to the MNYRO going into emergency ahead of it. The crew on the MNYRO worked to back the train into the siding at Leyden to clear up for Amtrak.

A westbound coal empty with a patch Espee AC4400CW makes it way west through Leyden on a clear signal just after 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Houses have sprung up at east Leyden quite a bit in the last five years.

Even though this train is heading east toward Denver, it is the MNYRO (North Yard to Roper). Why on earth is it heading east? Because the MNYRO derailed between Clay and Plain earlier in the day and this is the back half (57 cars) of the train that didn't derail. The cars will be taken back to the yard and sent west after being inspected.

After getting the switch at west Rollins clear of snow and ice, UP 1989 and crew met an eastbound coal load, seen here taking the siding at Rollins. UP 1989 was originally going to meet the train at Tolland, but a frozen switch at west Rollins changes the location of the meet.

Ahh, the not-so-glamorous side of railroading! With the switch heater out of order at the west switch of Rollins, the conductor had to use a pick to clear the switch points of snow and ice. After throwing the switch a few times by hand, DS-82 was again able to throw the switch remotely from her desk 500 miles away in Omaha, NE.

I was very lucky to be able to get this shot. The Snow Bus was running well ahead of me (hindered by slow speeds on icy roads). However, the switch heater at west Rollins was not working and the switch was out of correspondence. UP 1989 had to stop so the conductor could walk up to the switch and swing/pick the snow out of the switch points, allowing me to grab a couple of nice shots, like this one.

With UP 1989 running on the point of the Snow Bus, I was hoping to get setup at the west switch of Cliff for a shot of the train heading west. However, slow speeds on snow-packed CO-72 kept me from getting in position in time. Instead, I had to settle for this shot of the train heading away from me along South Boulder Creek.

On days when the forecast calls for heavy snow in the mountains, UP will often dispatch a "Snow Bus" train west out of Denver. If roads are impassible and a crew needs to be relieved on a train, the Snow Bus will use the rails to pick up the old crew and replace it with a fresh crew. Here, the Snow Bus at Leyden is led by UP 1989.

AC4400CW in your face! A westbound coal empty has a clear signal through Cliff as the unit approaches the grade crossing at Cliff. The train will continue west two more sidings (to Tolland) before stopping to meet the eastbound California Zephyr.

BNSF trains headed west on UP track sometimes use BNSF track between Fox Junction and Utah Junction, and at other times they will use UP track. On this October evening, the Beer Run is running on UP's main as it passes by Fox Junction.

Whoops! That's gonna leave a mark. The handbrake on this covered hopper failed to get set. The hopper was on the BNSF Golden Branch (that leads to Coors) and ended up rolling east down the line! It was going roughly 45 MPH when it hit the switch at C&S Junction and derailed. What looks like snow in the foreground are actually little plastic (non-toxic) beads, which the hopper was carrying.

The eastbound California Zephyr is actually running a few minutes early as it zips east past the east switch of Kremmling. During the winter months, the Zephyr often runs with only seven Superliners west of Denver due to a decrease demand in ridership.
