A week earlier, I mentioned that a 50-foot section of the Rocky Spur had been removed just east of the CO-93 grade crossing. It seems that whatever utility work was being done beneath the tracks has been completed. The tracks have been reconnected and ballast has been laid.

Five covered hoppers sit on the Rocky Spur, east of a 50 foot gap in the rails. It appears that a ditch has been dug, perhaps to lay some plumbing. The covered hoppers have been sitting here for several months. Not sure what is going on with the aggregate plant at the north end of the spur.

Interestingly, I noticed that a 50 foot section of the Rocky Spur (Rocky Flats Industrial Lead) has been removed just east of the CO-93 grade crossing. This appears to have something to do with the commercial construction happening in the area on either side of the spur.

A brakeman protects the West Local making its reverse move south down the Rocky Spur, across Colorado Highway 93. Drivers are likely somewhat surprised to be stopped for a train as this spur only sees (on average) one train every three weeks.

The stop light protecting the tracks across (very busy) Colorado Highway 93 has turned green for the West Local, slowly backing up toward the crossing. Note that the light covers on several of the stop lights for CO-93 are missing, likely due to the high winds that are often found out here.

Cars on CO-93 are stopped at a stoplight that is green 99.9% of the time! The West Local has to cross both CO-93 and CO-72. The crossings are not protected by traditional lights and bells, however. Instead, there is a stoplight. When a train approaches, it trips a circuit that turns the light red for traffic and the train gets a green light. Trains also proceed at restricted speed, ready to stop very quickly in the event cars are not paying attention. Of note, UP 1344 is ex-DRGW 3121, so it certainly is not a stranger to the Rocky Spur.
