The Winter Park Express faces a green signal at the east end of Winter Park. However, the train is currently stopped as it is unloading its passengers. In the distance, you can see a few runs at Mary Jane, the more advanced runs at Winter Park. The two prominent runs in the upper right are both blue/black runs. The one to the left is call Hughes, the one to the right is called Little Pierre.

It is 9 o'clock in the morning and the Winter Park Express is unloading its passengers. The train apparently has every seat filled! Great news for the future likelihood of the continuation of the operation. Many skiers are gathering, getting ready to get on a lift and start their day.

After most of the passengers have disembarked at the Winter Park ski resort, the Winter Park Express continues west to Fraser with a handful of passengers. You can see the top of the ski resort in the distance, and some more clouds are starting to clear out.

The Winter Park Express approaches the grade crossing at Vasquez Road in the middle of residential Winter Park. The train has just two weeks left in what sounds like it has been a very successful season.

After the handful of passengers that rode the train all the way to Fraser are now off the train, the conductor on the Winter Park Express is about to get back on to protect the shove of the train back east by the green signal at the east end of Fraser, visible in the distance. The train will then enter the siding at Fraser to wait for the day until it is time to return east.

After dropping its passengers and backing east out of Fraser, the train is now moving west back into the siding at Fraser. The crew will cut the power away and run around the train, tacking it onto the east end so it is ready to head west this evening.

The westbound Zephyr crosses the former Kings Crossing Road grade crossing in Winter Park. Why former? There is a (relatively) new underpass that was constructed to bypass the grade crossing. However, not only has UP not bothered to remove the grade crossing, they haven't even disabled the crossing!

The California Zephyr crosses over Grand Park Drive on a relatively new bridge. The bridge was built around 2019 to bypass the grade crossing (which still exists) in the distance. Railroads have annual quotas for grade crossing removals. This is one that UP has been able to remove. Residents of Winter Park were happy as they did not have to wait for long oil (or occasional coal trains) slowly climbing the hill to the Moffat Tunnel.

It's station stop in Fraser complete, the westbound California Zephyr passes underneath US-40 on a clear (green) signal at East Tabernash. Note the slopes of the Winter Park Resort. Around 400 of the skiers on those slopes took the morning Winter Park Express!

AMTK 7 and AMTK 23 lead the westbound Zephyr, running right on time as it heads west on the main at Tabernash. The Zephyr still runs exclusively with P42DCs. The new ALC Chargers require a fuel additive called DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) as they are Tier-4 compliant. Rumor has it that Amtrak has been unable to find a DEF provider for Denver. Denver is the refuel spot for the Zephyr between Chicago and Emeryville.

Shooting between Winter Park and Tabernash can be a rough proposition as the tracks run (more or less) geographically north-south. That said, I was quite happy with this shot of UP's North Yard to Grand Junction manifest, about to knock down a clear (green) signal at East Fraser.

A single UP SD70ACe brings up a (somewhat rare) eastbound coal load. The train is currently tied down in the siding at Granby. Apparently, one of the units on the train failed as the train was moving through Fraser Canyon. The crew backed the train down between switches at Granby. It currently waits for an additional unit from Denver.
