About 12 miles west of Green River, US-6 moves to join the tracks after crossing over them west of the siding of Desert. A pair of UP DPUs brings up the tail end of an eastbound loaded oil train.

An eastbound oil load navigates the plains of the desert between Vista and Desert along the Book Cliffs. If you look in the distance, you can see a string of open hoppers being stored in the siding of Vista.

The siding of Desert is one of my favorite places to hang out and shoot trains in the Utah desert. First off, it is just such an appropriately named siding. Second, it is on a long, straight stretch of track where trains can get up to full track speed. Finally, it offers an amazing view with the Book Cliffs creating a perfect backdrop to the east of the tracks.

Highball Desert! BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest crosses the bridge at MP 566.93, kicking up dust as it moves along at 60 MPH. The train approaches a clear (green) signal at the east end of the siding of Desert. A siding that currently cannot be used for meets as it is filled with cars in storage.

Out in the open Utah desert, you have to plan your shots for the Zephyr somewhat carefully. Through much of the desert, the Zephyr can get up to 79 MPH, exceeding the speed limit on US-6. So, through here, it is essentially a "one and done" shot. This morning's shot comes between the sidings of Woodside and Desert as the Zephyr is at track speed. AMTK 164, AMTK 54, and a pair of Chargers lead the train.

The shadows on the Book Cliffs from the late afternoon sun help to clearly define all the ridges as the westbound California Zephyr passes underneath US-6 with a special addition in tow. Previously owned by Rio Grande and later by the Ski Train, the car will now go to the American Railway Explorer in Los Angeles.

This is why I love coming to the Utah desert! Bathed in fantastic evening light, the westbound California Zephyr is about a mile west of the appropriately-named siding of Desert. In the distance, the Book Cliffs stand tall.

With the Book Cliffs posing as a backdrop, Amtrak 5 moves at track speed (near 80 MPH) along US-6 on its journey west. The train is approaching the siding of Desert, about 8 miles west of Green River, UT.

The sun was out and the clouds were beautiful as the Denver-Stockton passes underneath US-6 at track speed. In the distance, the Book Cliffs look great in the afternoon sunlight.

One of the BNSF trains that regularly runs over UP trackage rights across the Utah desert is the MSTODEN (Stockton to Denver). Here, the train is clipping along at 55 MPH as it highballs the appropriately named siding of Desert.
