The eastbound Zephyr is stopped on the east siding at Glenwood, right in front of the Glenwood Springs depot for its scheduled station stop. Many passengers will board the train here, as a lot of people take the Zephyr to (and from) Glenwood Springs from Denver for a couple days getaway.

The eastbound Zephyr is right on time as it heads east on the main at Glenwood. Glenwood actually has two sidings, and east siding and a west siding. The main is located between the two sidings. At the Center Glenwood crossover, the Zephyr will move from the main to the east siding for its station stop.

A Herzog train is stopped in the west siding at Glenwood, emptying ballast from the train into a pile on the ground in the yard at Glenwood. This train worked throughout the day, dumping ballast along the tracks. Indeed, UP close the line today, resulting in Amtrak not running between Denver and Grand Junction.

Passengers whose destination is Glenwood Springs get off the Zephyr, we see the historic depot in the foreground and the Glenwood Hot Springs in the background across the Colorado River and on the other side of I-70. It is this hot springs resort that makes Glenwood Springs such a popular destination for passengers on the Zephyr.

For the last time on Mondays for an indefinite amount of time, the westbound Zephyr pulls into the siding at Glenwood Springs for its station stop. Any passengers disembarking for a visit in Glenwood Springs will have to wait until Wednesday or Friday to return to Denver on the train as there will be no eastbound Zephyrs through Glenwood on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

While its true that Amtrak is sometimes delayed, it is also true that traveling by car is not always a walk in the park! The eastbound Zephyr gets to proceed into and through Glenwood Canyon while eastbound traffic on I-70 is at a dead standstill. A fire alongside Glenwood Canyon has I-70 shut down at the moment, and traffic isn't going anywhere. Indeed, some people are even getting out of their car and talking with their asphalt neighbors. I'll bet the passengers on Amtrak are enjoying the view as they roll east by the stopped traffic!

Two sets of three unit engine sets sit in the yard in Glenwood Springs. Both are waiting for an eastbound coal load to come out of Grand Junction. Three units will be added as mid-train swing helpers to each eastbound coal train that comes through. The swing helpers will assist the train on the climb up to the Moffat Tunnel. They will then be set out in Denver.

The trucks on these Amtrak California cars is reminiscent of the ones found on the Ski Train cars in the Ansco days. However, unlike the Ski Train cars, these cars have traditional brakes and not disk brakes.

As the Zephyr stops for passengers in Glenwood Springs, we get a look at the side of one of four Amtrak California cars catching a ride on the Zephyr. In this case, this is The Valley Flyer.

Looking east from the Glenwood Springs depot, we see several Amtrak California that are catching a ride on the Zephyr from California to points east. This meant the power had to pull beyond the platform, much further than is typical for the stop here in Glenwood.

A pair of units sit idling in the yard at Glenwood Springs. Earlier in the day, there had been three units here, presumably waiting for an eastbound coal train to be used as mid-train swing helpers. However, earlier in the day, a crew showed up and took one of the units east out of the yard. Where it ended up going? I do not know!

If you are ever traveling on the California Zephyr (or any long distance Amtrak train), many of the larger (or more popular) stations allow you to check your bags. Any checked bags will get to ride in the baggage car, located directly behind the engines. Here, an Amtrak crew works to load checked bags for passengers leaving Glenwood Springs on the Zephyr.

A shot for the ages! For decades, passenger trains have been rolling through the siding at Glenwood, up to and stopping at the Glenwood Springs depot. A process that thankfully is still repeated daily with the California Zephyr.
