Here at Winter Park, close to 9,000 feet above sea level, many of the trees have already shed their leaves for the winter. However, several are still hanging on and offer up a great a backdrop for the westbound Zephyr. This is the last Monday the Zephyr will run for the foreseeable future as Amtrak has chosen to change all long distance trains to run three days a week instead of daily!

A shortened westbound Zephyr, running without a baggage car or a transition sleeper, runs west on the main at Tabernash along the Fraser River. The Fraser River follows the tracks to Granby where it joins in with the Colorado River.

Byers Canyon is relatively short, but still very scenic. The tracks skirt the north side of the canyon and Colorado River while US-40 allows cars to run through the canyon on the south side. Here, the Zephyr heads away from the camera on its journey west.

Little Gore Canyon is one of the many beautiful canyons that the Zephyr runs through on its journey through Colorado. This canyon is shorter than Gore Canyon, but the walls of the canyon are a bit more sheer in many places. Here, the Zephyr just passed through Tunnel 39 (in the distance) and is now passing through relatively short Tunnel 40.

Not too far east of Yarmony, we find the westbound Zephyr making great time amidst fall foliage and the Colorado River. With so few trains on the Moffat (meaning minimal meets) and very few slow orders right now, it can be a substantial challenge chasing the Zephyr!

Just east of Bond, the tracks cross underneath State Bridge. The bridge connects Bond with I-70 at Wolcott via CO-131. There are several deciduous trees and ground foliage in the State Bridge area. Here in early October, they are pretty much in full on fall mode, showing their fantastic colors to passengers on the westbound California Zephyr.

There is a spot not far east of Range on the Dotsero Cutoff where the Colorado River makes a wide 180° curve. Colorado River Road follows the river the long way around, but the tracks take a shortcut, crossing the river twice in less than a mile. Here, at the west crossing, we find the Zephyr passing through a fantastic fall scene.

Nearing the west end of the Dotsero Cutoff, the westbound Zephyr emerges from behind trees that are in the middle of their transition from summer to fall. A beautiful time to ride the rails through the Rockies!

For the last time on Mondays for an indefinite amount of time, the westbound Zephyr pulls into the siding at Glenwood Springs for its station stop. Any passengers disembarking for a visit in Glenwood Springs will have to wait until Wednesday or Friday to return to Denver on the train as there will be no eastbound Zephyrs through Glenwood on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Passengers whose destination is Glenwood Springs get off the Zephyr, we see the historic depot in the foreground and the Glenwood Hot Springs in the background across the Colorado River and on the other side of I-70. It is this hot springs resort that makes Glenwood Springs such a popular destination for passengers on the Zephyr.

After getting through canyon west of Glenwood Springs, the Zephyr reaches Chacra and the start of Grand Valley. The landscape opens up, allowing for much higher speeds for trains. Here at east end of Chacra, the Zephyr passes by some brilliant fall colors as it picks up speed. It will go 70+ MPH for much of the remaining trip to Grand Junction.

If you are from Colorado...or even if you are not...you may be familiar with Palisade peaches. The town of Palisade, which is about 11 miles east of Grand Junction, is known for both its peaches and its vineyards. You can see a bit of both in this shot as the westbound Zephyr heads west on the main. I-70 runs along the barren cliff in the background. The siding of Palisade is one of the longest between Denver and Grand Junction at 12,200 feet. In order to attempt new cost saving measures, this is the final westbound Zephyr on a Monday for the foreseeable future. For now, the Zephyr will run west out of Denver on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. It will run east out of Grand Junction on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday.
