The eastbound Zephyr rolls east through what is arguably the most amazing canyon between Denver and Glenwood Springs: Gore Canyon. The canyon is inaccessible by car and shots from inside the canyon are rare. Drone technology does help out a bit though, as we can see Tunnels 37 and 36 in the distance.

Even if you are experienced with the Moffat Tunnel Sub, it may take a second to recognize the location of this shot as it is from a different perspective. The eastbound Zephyr is just entering the west end of Gore Canyon. Just barely visible at the back end of the S-Curve is Tunnel 38. The slope on the other side of the Colorado River in the background leads up to Inspiration Point.

UP 1988 works its way through the narrow canyon known as "Little Gore Canyon". The canyon starts at Tunnel 39 to the east (which the train is approaching) and ends just past Tunnel 40 to the west.

UP 1988 leads a train out of Tunnel 40 in Little Gore Canyon. As the days grow shorter, the shadows are starting to grow longer, creeping up on the tracks even now at 1pm.

A look at the two private cars on the tail end of the California Zephyr, both owned by Patrick Henry Creative Promotions. The cars are based out of Houston, but were being used on this day to take some passengers from Chicago to San Francisco. In this shot, the train has just emerged from Tunnel 39 and is now in Little Gore Canyon.

Looking out the window of the Lounge Car on the Zephyr, the Colorado River is largely frozen at the bottom of Gore Canyon. The Zephyr is approaching Tunnels 36 and 35.

Gore Canyon! An amazing, vertical wall canyon that cannot be accessed by car. If you look closely, you can pick out the west portal of Tunnel 37.

The Zephyr is pretty insignificant compares to the massive canyon walls of Gore Canyon. The canyon is inaccessible unless you are on a train, know how to ride the rapids, or want to do some serious hiking!

From Inspiration Point, the Zephyr looks more like a model as it works its way east past the east switch of Azure. The train is about to head straight in to one of the most magnificent canyons on its journey: Gore Canyon.
