I could have gotten a shot in Byers Canyon, but it was raining pretty hard there and, after shooting the westbound Zephyr there earlier in the day, I opted to just get ahead and get a shot here, west of Granby. UP 1988 and UP 8237 lead a coal load east. The train is only 78-cars and, as such, has two units on the point and two units on the rear. The lighting is not ideal for the westbound Zephyr, but it could be worse. It offers a nice view of the train in front of the Continental Divide in the distance. The consist of the Zephyr is pretty typical for the Spring. There is a transition sleeper (for the crew), two sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and three coaches on the tail end. Just a stones throw away from this spot is the future home of the "Moffat Museum". This crane will be moved over to the museum at some point in the future. In the distance, you may notice a dog leg in the tracks. This is because, many years ago, Granby actually had two sidings! An east siding and a west siding. The east siding was on the north side of the main and the west siding was on the south side of the main. In the late 1980s, the two were connected. The east siding got welded rail and became the main. The old main on the east siding was connected to the west siding and became the extended siding. Unlike the station stop at Fraser, which is about 10 minutes and gives passengers a chance to step off the train, the stop in Granby is much shorter.
