One challenge certainly can be just finding a train. Short lines often have a lot of track and only one or two trains operating on any given day. However, once you find one, it is usually pretty easy to get ahead of it as speeds are lower and stops for switching are frequent. It is now headed back west, passing by its headquarters. OMLX 421, a former Espee Tunnel Motor, is sitting at the shop. I was hoping it would be on the train today, but alas, it was not. The railroad is headquartered in Grant, NE, roughly 20 miles east of the Colorado/Nebraska border. On the east edge of town, you can see the Nebraska State Championships for the Plainsmen. It was originally delivered to Canadian National (as CN 5126) in 1969. After going through a handful of leaser railroads, the unit wound up on the roster of OmniTrax, the owner of NKCR. Two years ago, it was repainted in an OmniTrax paint scheme that includes the Scoular name (an Agriculture Supply Chain Solutions company), and the NKCR herald on the cab. Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado is one such short line. The railroad is owned by OmniTrax, and has just over 500 miles of track. The railroad is based in Grant, NE and has seven units on the roster.
