If, as a railfan, you have never taken the time to chase a short line railroad, it is a lot of fun. One challenge certainly can be just finding a train. Short lines often have a lot of track and only one or two trains operating on any given day. However, once you find one, it is usually pretty easy to get ahead of it as speeds are lower and stops for switching are frequent. Here, a Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado train heads west out of Grant, NE.

An NKCR train departed Grant eastbound this morning to switch in Madrid, NE. It is now headed back west, passing by its headquarters. OMLX 421, a former Espee Tunnel Motor, is sitting at the shop. I was hoping it would be on the train today, but alas, it was not. OMLX 413 was used for today instead.

Although Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado is owned by OmniTrax, it is one of roughly 25 railroads owned by OmniTrax, and still operates on its own to a certain extent. The railroad is headquartered in Grant, NE, roughly 20 miles east of the Colorado/Nebraska border. On the east edge of town, you can see the Nebraska State Championships for the Plainsmen.

While the Class 1 railroads have most of the power and most of the rail miles in the country, don't underestimate the role of short line railroads. Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado is one such short line. The railroad is owned by OmniTrax, and has just over 500 miles of track. The railroad is based in Grant, NE and has seven units on the roster. Here, a pair of SD40s lead a westbound manifest consisting of three covered hoppers and a string of tank cars.
