The Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s lead the train west across the Green River in the oasis in the desert that is also named Green River. The eight car train is headed for Salt Lake City as part of a test run for expanded service in 2026.

As this westbound UP oil train starts to pick up speed, it blurs by one of the Amtrak station signs for Green River under a cloudy, cool morning.

Amtrak's station stop in Green River was, like it usually is, extremely fast. There were no passengers to drop off and no passengers to pick off. The train came to a stop and the conductor immediately informed the engineer they could highball and continue east. As the Zephyr pulls away from the platform, a westbound UP oil train passes by on the main. Not the interesting number board on the conductors side of UP 8222, using a non-bold serif font.

As the California Zephyr comes to a stop for its station stop in Green River, a westbound UP empty oil train starts pulling west on the main track. The train had been stopped short of the grade crossing in the distance, so as not to block it. With the Zephyr now here, the train has started to pull to continue west.

The eastbound Zephyr slowly pulls alongside the very nice platform at Green River. Alas, the former depot building itself, owned by UP, is locked up, fences off, and inaccessible to passengers.

The eastbound California Zephyr is running about an hour late, partly due to some CTC issues between Helper and Green River. The train slowly approaches the very nice platform and its station stop at Green River.

The former yard at Green River, small though it once was, has now been largely converted into a dirt maintenance of way and storage area for Union Pacific. A couple of oil Rio Grande signals and several other control boxes sit in the quite morning.

Riding off into the sunset! A fantastic end to a fantastic day as this westbound coal load leaves Green River behind to continue on its journey west toward California.

With the Zephyr now past and the sun now hiding behind clouds to the west, it is this coal loads turn to head west. The two units on the head end "put their backs into it" as they throttle up to start the climb toward Helper and Soldier Summit.

UP's DS-378 is doing a great job of keeping the Zephyr moving, running around a loaded coal train at Green River. With its station stop now complete, the Zephyr is re-entering the mainline to continue the charge west.

When the Rio Grande Zephyr was running, the stop at Green River, UT was considered a flag stop. Meaning the train would only stop if it was known in advance that there were passengers to drop off or to pick up. When Amtrak's California Zephyr took over for the Rio Grande Zephyr in April 1983, Green River became a regular stop for the Zephyr. That is still true today in 2025. The westbound Zephyr has just completed its stop at Green River, and is now passing a waiting coal train on the main track.

In a sky that has had clouds building all day, a sucker hole opened up and provided some direct sunlight at the west end of Green River. This coal train is currently stopped, the crew looking at all red. The westbound Zephyr is going to overtake the train here. The depot at Green River is located on the siding, hence the necessity for the coal train to hold the main track.

The eastbound Zephyr crosses a very full Green River after making its station stop. Directly beneath the leading power of the Zephyr, a group of campers are liking waking up to the sound of the train crossing the steel above them.

The eastbound Zephyr is making its station stop on the siding at Green River, about 1 hour and 45 minutes behind schedule. Most sidings are perfectly parallel the main track they are next to. Green River, however, is an example of one that strays slightly from the mainline alignment.

A slowed shutter speed creates a bit of a motion blur for the final DPU unit on an eastbound oil train. The train knocked down a clear (green) signal...but this particular intermediate off in the distance has not yet been replaced by UP. In fact, you can still see the lunar (white-ish) bottom signal, indicating eastbound trains approaching it can proceed without stopping at this restricting signal.
