After chasing this unit grain train for about 3 1/2 hours on the Brush Sub, I was really hoping that there would be some direct sunlight available here at "Keensburg Curve". Alas, overcast skies prevent that. However, it's still hard to complain with a unique shot like this one, regardless of the lighting. CP 7007 (a former SD9043MAC, #9119, now an SD70ACu) and CP 8501 (an AC4400CW) leads this loaded grain train, headed for Guernsey, CA.

I was hoping, along with several other railfans, to get a shot of this CP-led grain train in sunlight at the spot known colloquially among railfans as "Keensburg Curve". There was a sliver a sunlight between cloud layers that probably would have worked out perfect, if the train did not have to stop at Market Street in Keensburg. You might notice in this shot that the crossing gates are up. The conductor had to get off the train and protect the grade crossing as the engineer brought the train across the grade crossing. It had to stop again, of course, to let the conductor back on the train. I was able to get this shot at the grade crossing in some decent light.

A pair of SD70ACes bring up the back of a westbound loaded coal train moving away from the camera. With very few exceptions, BNSF coal trains run in a 2x2 configuration, and this train falls right in to that standard category.

A coal load from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming is likely headed for a power plant somewhere in Texas. The train will continue west on the Brush Sub to Denver before turning south on the Joint Line, down in to Texas.

A BNSF coal train that loaded in the Powder River Basin, specifically at the East Black Thunder Mine, now heads west on the main on the western edge of the small Colorado Plains town of Keensburg. Once reaching Denver, the crew will change and the train will turn south on the Joint Line.

A pair of BNSF units sit on the siding near the west end of Keensburg. They are likely here so that they can haul Amtrak Superliners back to Denver. The Zephyr struck a semi overnight and crews are currently working to rerail the derailed cars.

A pair of ES44ACs lead a westbound Z-train just west of Keensburg. This Z-train, which originated in Chicago and is headed for Denver, is the hottest train that runs in to Denver on either UP or BNSF. Amtrak actually ran through the siding at Keensburg so the Z-train could get back up to track speed more quickly once the Zephyr cleared.

After meeting a very late Zephyr at Keensburg, BNSF's Z-train from Chicago to Denver is approaching the "Keensburg Curve" just west of the west switch. There are a lot of JB Hunt and Amazon Prime containers on the train.

About a mile west of "downtown" Keensburg, an eastbound BNSF mixed intermodal/manifest Q-train rounds the curve. Once reaching Brush, the train will turn north and continue on the Brush Sub to Sterling, then north on the BNSF Angora Sub in to Nebraska.

On this first day of fall, the further west I travelled back toward Denver, the thicker the cloud coverage got. When I setup for this shot, the scene was bathed in great lightning. Alas, a cloud blew in and added shade to the scene a mere 30 seconds prior to the arrival of the train! Ah well...the curve at Keensburg still looks mighty fine, even in the shade.

There is a long, sweeping curve that approaches a cut just west of Keensburg on the Brush Sub. While this curve offers pretty descent shots any time of day, afternoon shots of westbounds are just about as ideal as you could ask for. Such is the case here, as this westbound coal load slowly pulls up the grade out of Keensburg. The train just met a manifest, and had to start pulling up the grade from a stop.

A CEFX leasor SD60 adds a splash of color...or perhaps, more accurately, a splash of lack of color...with its dominate white scheme. This eastbound manifest is round a long curve just west of Keensburg, which is visible in the distance.

A former SOO SD60 (now owned by CIT Finance, a railroad leasing company) heads east out of Denver on a manifest. I thought it was particularly fortuitous, catching this unit, as I have shot it a couple of times over the previous nine months in and around Denver. For most of its time in town, it was used as power on the Beer Run between Denver and Golden.

there is a nice cut about a mile west of Keensburg. It is a great place for getting both eastbounds and westbounds. Case in point is this eastbound manifest, currently in dynamics as it heads down grade. The train is being led by a (recently) highly popular ES44C4. While BNSF management appears to love these units, word is that engineers are not so crazy about them.
