A pair of SD70ACes bring up the tail end of a train carrying "black diamonds" (coal) on their way from Wyoming to Texas. A thin cloud layer has been hiding direct sunlight most of the morning.

The classic view of a southbound as it crosses over West Fox Farm Road, East Plum Creek, and Spruce Mountain Road. The old "Santa Fe" lettering and herald are still barely visible, time definitely taking its toll.

BNSF 6064 just passed another green intermediate as it gets close to the south end of the "Castle Rock Corridor", where Main 1 parallels I-25 for a little over eight miles south of Castle Rock.

The Frontage Road on the west side of I-25 is currently closed due to construction of the Crystal Valley Parkway bridge, just visible in the distance. A southbound BNSF coal load rolls by the south end of the closure, which has been in place for over a year at this point.

Just south of Castle Rock, there is a bridge being built across I-25, the Frontage Roads on both sides of I-25, and Main 1. This is a continuation of the road Crystal Valley Parkway. As you can see in this picture, the bridge itself has been built. But there is still a lot of work to come as interchanges with I-25 are going to be built. The frontage road on the west side of I-25 is closed and has been completely torn up in places, but will eventually be reopened. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Amtrak's AIRO special crosses over the classic Santa Fe bridge on the south side of Larkspur on Main 1. Being summer, the sun is high and and the lighting is not great, but it is still pretty cool to see Amtrak equipment crossing the bridge. An extremely rare site to see, to be sure.

This is a spot that I have thought about shooting at, but I never got around to it until today! Love the wall of trees that this southbound unit coal train is passing as it cuts into the 1.2% grade. Uncountable thousands of coal trains have passed this way since the Powder River Basin really started mining in the mid-to-late 1980s.

A southbound coal load parallels I-25 just north of Larkspur. Main 1 sticks pretty close to I-25 from Castle Rock to the I-25 exit for Larkspur. There, the highway continues over the ridge to Greenland, while the tracks cut through Larkspur, keeping the grade to roughly 1.2%.

As a fairly significant summer thunderstorm rolls east, a CN-led, BNSF grain train crosses East Plum Creek, Spruce Mountain Road, and Fox Farm Road on the old Santa Fe bridge, which still sports a faded Santa Fe label and herald. Shots from the north side of the bridge are hard to get due to lighting, but the overcast skies made it possible on this June 1st.

UP's MNYPU manifest crosses over the classic Santa Fe bridge. The bridge takes the tracks over West Fox Farm Road, East Plum Creek, and Spruce Mountain Road. When Rio Grande and Santa Fe were competing to build lines between Denver and Pueblo, Rio Grande started first and, as a result, got the "more friendly" alignment. Here, Main 1 (the modern southbound main) was the original Santa Fe grade.

This manifest is headed north on Main 2 just south of Larkspur. On this particular part of the Joint Line, Main 2 is (technically) owned by UP. UP also dispatches trains on Main 2, which still uses Track Warrants and ABS (Automatic Block Signals). BNSF has upgraded Main 1, which is now CTC.

BNSF 4992 and BNSF 8247 lead southbound over the classic Santa Fe bridge on the south side of Larkspur. The train is BNSF's Spokane, WA to Alliance, TX Q-train. Notes quite a few loads of lumber from the Pacific Northwest. The second half of the train is TOFC and COFC intermodal.
