As the MNYGJ passes by the red "Cold War Horse", we observe a what is becoming an increasingly rare site...a patched Espee AC4400CW! The train is also passing by the neighborhood of Leyden Rock, over to the left.

On a great July morning, UP's MNYGJ heads west out of Leyden as you can see Denver's skyline in the background. This train usually departs North Yard at night, but a delay resulted in a morning departure today.

A pair of DPUs, an SD70ACe and an ES44C4, push on the tail end of the westbound Denver-Provo just west of Leyden. For several years after the UP/SP merger, when BNSF first got trackage rights on the Moffat, BNSF ran manned helpers from Denver to East Portal, cutting off at East Portal and running back to Denver light. Sadly, those day are now long gone, as DPUs now rule.

The eastbound Zephyr is approaching a 40 MPH slow order near Leyden underneath some stormy skies and clouds with Rocky Mountains basking in the light of a still-clear sky.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of this eastbound coal load as the train crosses over Indiana Avenue and heads down the main at Leyden. Today's Zephyr is running five hours late, so there was no westbound resistance for the load to have to worry about coming down from the Moffat.

It's been quite awhile since I've taken some shots of mid-train swing helpers on an eastbound coal load on the Moffat! January 2019, to be exact. Coal trains have become few and far between, on the Moffat, so it was nice to see two ES44ACs and an AC4400CW cut in to the middle of this coal train that loaded at Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

For the first time in months, Energy Mine on the Craig Branch seems to finally be starting to load trains again! Such is the case with this train, which is now approaching a clear signal at the west switch of Leyden. Great to see a mile long train with "black diamonds" running on the Moffat again, considering how scarce these have become.

The Zephyr just crossed Simms Street in Arvada and is approaching a clear signal at the east end of Leyden. In the distance, you can clearly see the Denver Skyline, where the Zephyr just departed from about 30 minutes earlier.

This manifest, which originated in Grand Junction last night, is on the final few miles of its journey to North Yard. In addition to several older geeps being transported, the train itself is relatively short and mostly consists of covered hoppers.

The lease on this quartet of GMTX GP38-2 units has expired. With the economy being in a major slump right now, UP had no need to extend the lease, so they are being returned to GATX Rail Locomotive Group.

Normally, you'd expect the Zephyr to be facing the other direction in this light and at this time of day! And normally, you'd be right. However, yesterday's Zephyr encountered some serious delays and is running over 14 hours late as it gets close to its stop in Denver. In fact, the train will meet its counterpart at Utah Jct!

A pair of units lead a work train out of Leyden, approaching the little bridge over Church Ditch. The train departed Oakland, CA three days earlier and made its way across Nevada, Utah, and in to Colorado. The train will head south on the Joint Line to get to Pueblo, adding a relatively rare UP train to the Joint.

They tend to be few and far between these days, but every once in awhile you can still luck out and find an oil train on the Moffat! Such was the case on this morning just west of Leyden, as a loaded BNSF oil train rolls east in great morning sunlight.

You can check out a video of the train on the ColoradoRailfan YouTube page. Please consider subscribing!

A UP passenger special charges west out of Leyden. It was rumored that Union Pacific CEO Lance Fritz himself was a passenger on this particular special!

BNSF is sending a sand train west to the facility in Wellington, UT. The trains are heavy and extremely slow going. This particular train would stall out west of Plain!
