The Zephyr just crossed Simms Street in Arvada and is approaching a clear signal at the east end of Leyden. In the distance, you can clearly see the Denver Skyline, where the Zephyr just departed from about 30 minutes earlier.

After meeting the Zephyr at Rocky, BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest rolls east toward Leyden alongside CO-72. The train now has a clear shot in to the yard.

Despite having four units, this Provo-Denver is actually pretty darn short! Only 21 cars making up the train today, including a box car, three covered hoppers, an empty centerbeam, and 16 tank cars. The train is paralleling CO-72 and Welton Reservoir. This Reservoir was built in 2002 and started filling in 2003. It's primary use is for drinking water.

Whereas coal used to be the main commodity on the Moffat, with as many as 9 loads and 9 empties running in a 24 hour period in 2007, today it has become extremely scarce! The Moffat will now go days, weeks, or even months between coal trains. I was lucky to catch one on the second day of summer, seen here climbing west out of Rocky toward Big Ten.

An SD70ACe leads five GEs (including a Norfolk Southern unit) on the climb up Big Ten Curve from Rocky. This coal empty is the first in over a week to run west from Denver. The train has 105 cars headed for the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch south of Grand Junction.

A coal empty passes by the open hoppers that wrap around the inside curve of Big Ten. Those hoppers have been sitting there alongside the main for nearly 50 years, serving as a wind break. This morning, An SD70ACe and an NS AC4400CW lead four other UP GEs west around the curve.

As the head end of this coal empty comes through the final curve of Big Ten Loop, the tail end of the train still making its way up from the west switch at Rocky above and right-of-center in the frame, offering a great example of all the twists and turns and bends that make up this incredible feat of engineering to gain altitude while tempering the grade of the tracks.

A 105-car coal empty is making its way west (geographically north) along the main at Eisele (Clay). The train has an Advanced Approach signal at the west end as has been informed by the dispatcher that he'll be waiting for awhile at Plain in order to meet the MGJNY.

Nearing the east end of the Tunnel District, an eastbound UP manifest...the only one left on the Moffat...approaches the west portal of Tunnel 2. You can see the train coming through Tunnel 3 toward the right, and then wrap around out of view and into Tunnel 4.

Prior to this shot of a UP coal empty (in the siding, to the left) and the MGJNY (on the main), I do not specifically recall the last time I saw a meet between two UP trains on the Moffat. Several days of the week find only a single UP train running (MNYGJ/MGJNY). Sundays have no regularly scheduled UP trains at all. The MGJNY is just coming out of Tunnel 2 toward a clear signal at the west switch of Plain.

Note the SD40-2 that is last in the consist. This unit is most likely due for a 92-day inspection. That means it still has a long way to go as it'll likely have to go to North Platte, NE to receive said inspection, thanks to the closing of Burnham in Denver.
