The California Zephyr has, of course, changed much over the course of fifty years! In the last ten years though, it is very common for the Zephyr to have eight Superliners: three sleepers, three coaches, a diner and a lounge car. One of the cars - either a sleeper or a coach - was missing on this particular day.

After a full day of skiing for the passenger (and a full day of work for me), the Ski Train is on its way back home as it passes the turnout that leads to the Mesa Oil Chemical Plant.

With the mornings passenger trains - the Ski Train and the California Zephyr - out of the way, the daily MNYRO is free to head west! Union Pacific commonly runs the MNYRO with coal power these days. It allows five or six units to be transfer to Glenwood Springs for staging as eastbound swing helpers.

It is a beautiful Thursday morning in as the westbound California Zephyr leaves Leyden behind. The dark patch on the slope is the result of a fire started by the West Local about ten days earlier.

The second westbound passenger train of the day heads west through Leyden. The Ski Train passed through here about an hour earlier as it headed for Winter Park.

The tail end of the Ski Train is disappearing into the shadows of Barbara's Gulch on its journey west. In the distance near the top of the shot, note the hopper cars at Big Ten Loop.

Starting in late February, the Ski Train added Thursday's to its round trip between Denver and Winter Park. For these five weeks or so, the Ski Train will run four out of seven days of the week! Here, the train is running through Barbara's Gulch.

It is getting close to sunset as an eastbound coal train makes its way toward Denver. This particular coal train loaded at the Savage Mine on the CV Spur near Price, UT. It is headed for St Louis where it will be delivered to CSX.

The Ski Train has been waiting patiently for this westbound coal empty to pull into the clear in the siding at Leyden. The switch at the east end is currently be thrown, and the Ski Train will be rolling east very soon!

Two BNSF helpers - an ES44AC and an AC4400CW - are pushing on the tail end of a westbound coal empty at Leyden. The train sat at Sable on the KP for three days due to two bad order cars. They were finally set out and the train made a dusk departure out of Denver.

This picture may look a little bit odd; might have some pastel-type qualities to it. It took a lot of massaging in PhotoShop to get the picture into a state that was reasonably viewable! It was well past sunset at this point, and in fact twilight was nearly over. This is a UP coal train running with unit (5x2) BNSF power.

For the past few weeks, UP has been running a coal train with unit BNSF power west on the Moffat. BNSF is repaying some horsepower-miles. The train was called at 3:00pm on this day, but didn't leave North Yard until about five minutes after sunset. This shot has an interesting effect, which is the result of 1600 ISO and very little light left! The train is approaching the east switch at Leyden, where it will take the siding to meet the already-waiting Ski Train.

Got exhaust? The sun was getting low in the western sky, which really amplified the exhaust coming out of the hard-working engines! Here, they are approaching the west end of Barbara's Gulch.
