It is a bit of a brisk morning out as this BNSF double stack starts pulling north along Church Ranch Lake. The train had been waiting here so as not to block any grade crossing until the southbound they were going to meet reached Broomfield. Now that said southbound had reached Broomfield, it is time to go!

As a blade train wraps around the fill in Westminster, commuters work to get through the construction on Wadsworth Blvd. The road has been under construction for a couple months as CDOT works to repave the road, changing it from asphalt to concrete in the process.

It about a quarter after eight in the morning and this pair of Warbonnets brings a "blade train" around the big fill in Westminster. The blades will be used on wind turbines at a wind farm.

BNSF has repaired the flooding damage done to the St Joseph Subdivision in the Omaha area. However, the Napier and Omaha Subdivisions are still out of service, so coal empties will likely continue on the Front Range Sub throughout September. Here, one such reroute is stopped near Church Ranch Lake waiting for a southbound at Broomfield.

When I first went to Helper, UT in 1999, I saw nine Rio Grande SD40T-2's cut into the middle of a coal train as swing helpers for the climb up to Soldier Summit. The sound was amazing. It's great to see that 11 years later, the Dash-2 series is still in extremely wide use, even if it technically on a local (the Longmont Turn).

As much as I love Cascade Green, I almost wish the lead unit here had been in the Heritage scheme just so it matched the other three SD40-2's in the set. However, I'm not complaining as the sight and sound of four EMD 645 engines running was beautiful! If you'd like to hear, I recorded a brief clip and posted it along with this shot. While a nice pair of E-units might look a bit better, this matching pair of ES44DC's look pretty good on the point of this Officer's Special coming around the Westminster Fill. After a crew change in Denver, the special will continue south to La Junta.

A scorched BNSF C44-9W and a UP C44-9W team up - elephant style - to lead the Pasco, WA to Saginaw, TX freight (HPASSAG) south well after sunset. The train is approaching the 92nd Avenue underpass.

Please feel free to leave me a comment and let me know what you think of this shot! It was a high ISO (800) and hence a bit grainy. I actually really like the way it turned out in black and white. The train approaching is the HPASSAG (Pasco, WA to Saginaw, TX) about a mile and a half north of the Westminster Mall.

A seven-car BNSF Officer's Special came down the Front Range Sub, got to Denver, turned around, and headed back north toward Seattle. Not sure what the point of the special was, but here it is nonetheless! The train is near MP 10, coming around the big fill along Wadsworth Parkway.

As fall colors start to set in, a BNSF passenger special comes down the Front Range Sub. Here, the train is near the location of the derailment back in June (near American Furniture Warehouse).

It is getting late in the afternoon as a southbound HLAUDEN moves past the site of the Longmont Turn derailment three days earlier. Cars that could not be rerailed were pushed to the sides of the track. BNSF then laid "panel" track and got the line reopened. At this point, there is a 25 MPH slow order through the derailment site. The mountain in the distance is Longs Peak.

A look down the sides of BNSF 143 and BNSF 9801. Both units fell on their sides (the side shown here) when the Longmont Turn derailed three days earlier. In addition to being covered in dirt, it looks like both units have suffered some bent metal and some cracked windows. Seems like both units should return to service though.

A look up at the radiator on the right (rear) side of BNSF 143. Note that the hole for class lights (which is usually plugged) has popped out! The grab irons along the walk way have been badly bent.

A closer look at the front end of BNSF 143, the GP60M involved in the Longmont Turn derailment. A bit of mud on its face, but not too bad considering the severity of the derailment.
