It was nice to find this little gem on the westbound MNYGJ! The GP30 and the GP60 are my two favorite geeps. I really like the square dynamic brake intakes on the GP60. This particular GP60 was SP 9729 until June 22nd, 1998 when it became UP 5828. It held that number until July 3, 2001 when it moved to UP 2028.

The westbound MNYGJ (Manifest, North Yard to Grand Junction) is slowing as it approaches the east switch of Kremmling. Maintenance has some time in Gore Canyon to check out some slide fences. So, the train will have to sit patiently at a double red signal until maintenance can clear up.

Definitely not the best picture in the world (even as far as roster shots go), but you'll probably see why I included it right away! This is the first red and white number board that I've seen on a UP unit...

A couple of trees frame the shot of this eastbound coal load which is slowly picking up speed as it moves through Arvada. The train met a westbound at Leyden and is now headed for North Yard for a crew change.

The eastbound California Zephyr is actually running a few minutes early as it zips east past the east switch of Kremmling. During the winter months, the Zephyr often runs with only seven Superliners west of Denver due to a decrease demand in ridership.

BNSF's daily trackage rights manifest, which runs from Denver, CO to Provo, UT, is making its way west on the Moffat. The train has just crossed Kipling Street (back at the red intermediate) and is approaching 72nd Avenue. Note the sign that says "X" and "QZ". The "X" indicates to the crew that a grade crossing is approaching. The "QZ" indicates that the crossing is a "Quiet Zone", and that the horn should not be used (unless somebody is actually on the tracks).

We are quickly approaching the day when I will have to say "I never thought I'd see this again" ... I don't think we are quite there yet, but seeing an SD40-2 on a mainline freight is absolutely becoming an extremely rare sight! This SD40-2 was the last unit on the MRONY.

After meeting a couple trains and receiving a relief crew at Rocky, UP's daily MRONY is now just seven miles away from the end of its journey to Denver from Salt Lake City.

While Union Pacific purchased over 1,000 SD70Ms, Canadian National ordered the unit with a minor variation. This is an SD70I, which is like the SD70M, but with an EMD WhisperCab. Only 26 units were produced and all went to Canadian National. Not a bad catch for the middle of Colorado!

This shot really angered me. Why? About 90 seconds before the train showed up, this who spot was covered in glorious afternoon light! Then, a big fat cloud! Oh well...this is BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest headed west. Note the grade crossing sign along the side of the track: "X/QZ" -- The "QZ" represents "Quite Zone". Trains do not use their horns at Kipling.

Can you imagine how happy these passengers are making their way through this snow inside the comfort of the Ski Train rather than trying to drive over Berthoud Pass!

I'm about to get nailed by shooting snow and I know it! But that's okay as the shot turned out quite nice! The rail isn't quite visible beneath the freshly fallen snow just east of 72nd Avenue in Arvada as the Ski Train makes its was east.

Ten inches of snow have fallen here since the Ski Train headed west earlier in the day! This fairly common spring blizzard doesn't faze the Ski Train as it plows east toward Union Station.

Ten miles away from Union Station and this Saturday version of the Ski Train is running right on time on its journey home. This shot was taken at Kipling Parkway, just west of the intermediate signal at MP 9.8.
