UP 6936 leads an eastbound officer special down the mainline just west of the intermediate signals at Chemical. UP 6936 is the only active DDA40X on the rails. For those not familiar with such a unit, it has two physical prime movers under the hood, each producing 3,300 horsepower. The units were built by EMD as part of the horsepower race in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

While coal trains on the Moffat all have AC's (be it SD9043MACs, AC4400CWs, etc), UP manifests still offer the best variety when it comes to power. Sometimes, even the manifests get stuck with AC's, but more often then not there is something interesting to see! Such was the case on this morning when the MPVNY was led by an SD60, a C44-9W, and an SD40-2.

It is going to be a busy morning on the Moffat! Already there is an eastbound approaching the Moffat Tunnel, a westbound at Rollins, a westbound at Crescent, an eastbound at Clay, this westbound near Leyden, plus Amtrak and a coal empty that have yet to depart Denver! The MNYPV has a flashing yellow at Chemical and will go into Rocky for the first of several meets on the day.

An interesting thing about a shot like this...you can't really tell for sure whether or not the paint schemes match! As it turns out, they don't. On two of the five units is armour yellow (the first and third). Second unit is a standard cab NS SD70 and that last two units are both (patched) Espees. The train is climbing out of the Denver-Metro area (seen in the distance in the haze), just west of Leyden.
