More and more these days, helpers are run facing the "wrong way" from a railfan perspective...not that railroads do or should care about railfans! Anyway, a CSX AC4400CW shows the camera its tail end as it and a cousin BNSF C44-9W shove on the tail end of this manifest.

After passing a clear signal at the intermediate at MP 14.5, this westbound BNSF manifest is quickly approaching the Rocky Mountains. The signal at the left replaced Rio Grande signal in August 2005.

With the Denver skyline hanging in the haze, BNSF's westbound MDVPVJ-23 (Denver to Provo) trackage rights train is gaining altitude nearly 15 miles west of town. The train has a clear signal as a trio of C44-9Ws leads up the train.

Each year, Union Pacific runs an officers (mechanical) special so some of the higher-ups can view a lot of the UP system. This years special was led by UP 6936 and had 11 cars in the consist. Passengers in the last car enjoy stadium seating as they look out at the passing track and scenery out the back!

UP 6936 leads an eastbound officer special down the mainline just west of the intermediate signals at Chemical. UP 6936 is the only active DDA40X on the rails. For those not familiar with such a unit, it has two physical prime movers under the hood, each producing 3,300 horsepower. The units were built by EMD as part of the horsepower race in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Everything a great train photo needs...except, of course, for the train! After the sun dipped behind the mountains, the clouds came alive with a wonderful array of oranges turning to pinks. Note the Denver skyline in the distance. A westbound did wind up coming through here about 10 minutes after I took this shot. By then, the color from the clouds had gone.

The setting sun ignites the clouds in a pink flame as the last hopper of the Rocky Local passes the [relatively] new signal at MP 14.5. The train is moving west just above walking speed as it is in out of service limits due to maintenance.

Even though there is a lot of maintenance going on along the Moffat, the Rocky Local still needs to serve its customers! Here, the train has receive authority to enter the out of service limits (west of Leyden) and proceed west at restricted speed (~10 MPH). Had to move up to a high ISO as there was very little light left in the western sky!

With the shortest day of the year rapidly approaching (about 30 days away when this shot was taken), the sun was not far above the horizon at 7:30am! The MPVNY heads almost directly into the rising sun on the approach to Leyden.

While coal trains on the Moffat all have AC's (be it SD9043MACs, AC4400CWs, etc), UP manifests still offer the best variety when it comes to power. Sometimes, even the manifests get stuck with AC's, but more often then not there is something interesting to see! Such was the case on this morning when the MPVNY was led by an SD60, a C44-9W, and an SD40-2.

The daily MPVNY passes the old coal tower at Chemical on its journey east toward town. This was one of the few eastbound trains to come into town this morning due to a derailment on the Belt Main the night before. That derailment prevents coal train from reaching the KP, so they were all being tied down on the hill!

It is going to be a busy morning on the Moffat! Already there is an eastbound approaching the Moffat Tunnel, a westbound at Rollins, a westbound at Crescent, an eastbound at Clay, this westbound near Leyden, plus Amtrak and a coal empty that have yet to depart Denver! The MNYPV has a flashing yellow at Chemical and will go into Rocky for the first of several meets on the day.

An interesting thing about a shot like this...you can't really tell for sure whether or not the paint schemes match! As it turns out, they don't. On two of the five units is armour yellow (the first and third). Second unit is a standard cab NS SD70 and that last two units are both (patched) Espees. The train is climbing out of the Denver-Metro area (seen in the distance in the haze), just west of Leyden.

Not long after sunrise, the westbound MNYPV is on the roll west of Leyden. The train is being led by an SD70M, an SD70, and three AC4400CWs. The lead unit was having some issues and the train stopped momentarily at Leyden. You can see the lead unit is still smoking a bit more than the rest.
