The Denver area got hit by two snow storms over the course of four days. The first one left 15-24 inches of snow behind and the second added another 2-3 on top. This was the first (nearly) cloud-free morning in about five days.

Tried my best to get a rural looking shot despite the fact this area is anything but rural anymore! The Flat Iron Crossing mall is behind the train to the left and a relatively new condo complex is to the right. However, the Rockies look fantastic on a sunny February morning. Interestingly, you can actually see UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub on the mountains in the distance! Plainview is roughly above the double stacks (with Rainbow Cut above the first car) and tunnels 3 and 4 are above the lead unit.

The power on BNSF's Longmont Turn on this day is truly fantastic! A quartet of SD40-2's climb up the grade into Broomfield, pulling at 58 cars at milepost 17. As great as it was to watch, it was even more fantastic to listen too!

BNSF's Buck Local has just received a warrant to proceed from MP 18 down to MP 11. There, it will have to wait for a few minutes for MOW to clear up!

The same Valmont train that I shot three days earlier has been emptied and is now heading back to Denver. The two UP units from Saturday are the sole power for the empty train on this Tuesday.

Just north of Broomfield, BNSF's QTACDEN (Tacoma, WA to Denver, CO) makes it way through the S-Curve at MP 17. The train is under the power of a pair of brand new ES44C4s.

After switching several industries in Lafayette, the Longmont Switch returns toward Broomfield with seven cars in tow (and a caboose!).

In a rare daylight run, the Longmont Switch moves south down the Lafayette spur toward Broomfield. The engines will run around its train when it reaches Burns Junction. Longs Peak stands tall in the background.

A few miles north of Broomfield and this intermodal train (the Denver to Tacoma) is beginning the climb up the 1.6% grade of Burke Hill. I took this shot looking at the head end of the train in between two double stack containers.

A BNSF coal empty (rerouted from the Brush Sub due to maintenance) in the foreground, the soon-to-be-demolished Storage Tek complex a bit further back, and Longs Peak standing tall over it all in the distance. Two new [isolated cab] SD70ACes push on the rear of the train as it starts the climb on the south face of Burke Hill.

Beef! It's what's for dinner (apologies to all you vegetarians!) ... The northbound Valmont coal load, led up by BNSF 5807 and two UP AC4400CWs, passes a field along Brainard Road in Broomfield. A few cows looks on with disinterest as they search for fresh grass to graze on.

Two southbounds ahead of this train meant its warrants ran out at MP 17, so it had to stop and wait for the train ahead of it to get further down the track. With that requirement completed, a new warrant has been issued and the crew throttles up to continue south. You can always count on GE's to put on a good show when throttling up!

Power from the 21st Century (an ES44DC) leads up power from the 90's (a C44-9W) followed by some classic power from the 80's (an SD60), all running elephant style on the HDENLAU-02. Upon arriving at Longs Peak (just north of Longmont), the train will tie down due to maintenance further north on the line.

Lots of new development (within the last 5-15 years) in the background of this shot. The northbound HDENLAU approaches a new "ant hill" (behind the photographer) which has sprung up in the last two years. It was nice to see an Oakway SD60 - EMD 9070 - helping pull with the northbound.

When the SD70ACes first came out, they did not have EMD's "Isolated" or "Whisper" cabs. Some crews claimed that the new units were louder (with their doors and windows closed) than SD40-2s (with their doors and windows open)! As a result, BNSF is ordering their newer units with Isolated cabs included. Note the "seam" that runs vertically on the sides of the cab just behind the nose. The cab is physically isolated from the rest of the unit, cushioning it and making for a quieter ride. This was the first SD70ACe that I had seen with the Isolated cab.
