Nearly two miles of the track visible in the distance, this westbound coal empty is coming out of Clay and is on the approach to the Blue Mountain grade crossing.

Here is a long lens (300mm) shot of a coal train heading east (from upper part of the picture to lower part of the picture) through the loops around Coal Creek Canyon. Three mid-train swing helpers are in the foreground and a single DPU is sitting on the back.

An eastbound coal train wraps its way through the loops at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The head end of the train is roughly 3,100 feet ahead of the mid-train swing helpers.

The curves in the area of Blue Mountain offer some interesting shots in which you can see two sections of the same train in a single frame. UP 6028 leads a coal load east at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

A couple times each week, UP sends a manifest west to Phippsburg out of North Yard. Sand is probably the single largest commodity moved up to Craig via rail. A trio of AC4400CWs leads the train west at Blue Mountain.

What an effect a few clouds can have! This westbound has just crossed the grade crossing at Blue Mountain and is making its way west toward the hotbox detector at MP 22.6.

A whether record was set on Colorado on this particular day. It was the coolest high temperature for August 16th recorded in the Denver area! As the Ski Train comes west out of Clay, it is pouring rain and only about 50 degrees out.

At Blue Mountain, an eastbound manifest (the daily MRONY) works its way through the curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The gondolas in the background are just over 3,000 feet away from the head end (by rail), but only about half that distance as the bird flies.

The California Zephyr passes by Blue Mountain on its journey west. In the field (on the right side of the shot), a horse looks up momentarily from breakfast, showing only mild interest in the passenger train.
