Moffat Tunnel (UP) Amtrak
The westbound California Zephyr emerges from Tunnel One on its journey west. It is an unusually cool and wet August morning and passengers are probably very happy to be inside. On the left side of the picture, you might notice the headlight of another westbound. That is the Summer Ski Train, departing Clay on a yellow signal behind Amtrak.

A whether record was set on Colorado on this particular day. It was the coolest high temperature for August 16th recorded in the Denver area! As the Ski Train comes west out of Clay, it is pouring rain and only about 50 degrees out.

I almost missed this shot on account of water running into my eye! I forgot a hat and water dripped off my hair in my face right at the "clutch" moment! The Ski Train is coming west out of Tunnel One, not far behind a late-running California Zephyr.

Notice anything missing from this shot? Well, yeah, there isn't a train...but the green maintenance sheds that have been staple at Plainview as long as I can remember have apparently been removed!

A trio of C44-9Ws sit near the House in BNSF's yard in Denver. It was really nice seeing such a clean Heritage I unit. A definite advantage to all the rain from the morning!

A five month old ES44AC sits in the yards awaiting its next assignment. Later in the day the unit would be assigned to the ADVFGR which moved some empty auto racks to Griffin, IN.

This coal train loaded at the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch a few days earlier. In fact, after taking this picture, I realized I shot the exact same train three days earlier at Granby, heading west. You can see the picture here.

A company in Kanapolis, KS builds wind turbines. The bases for the turbines are shipped via rail from California. The bases are sent in the form of unit trains every couple of weeks (give or take). Here is one such train near the York Street grade crossing. It awaits a fresh crew to take it east on the KP into Kansas.

Power for the Denver, CO to Green River, WY freight has just coupled onto the train. An SD70ACe delivered in May 2007, UP 8564, will be leading two cousin SD70Ms for the trip north up the Greeley Subdivision.
