A pair of Canadian Pacific AC4400CWs running light down the Front Range Sub approach Independence Road in north Boulder. Another 1,000 feet or so and the power will come to a stop and wait for nearly two hours while the Valmont coal train switch on the main ahead.

With its journey nearly in the books, BNSF's daily HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) freight pulls across Pecos Street. In the next four to eight years, this scene is supposed to be quite different as RTD Light Rail (or Commuter Rail) should be visible at this location.

Just north of Boulder, this Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest is slowing in order to comply with the decreased speed through town.

Time for a break! The Valmont coal train is going to be dropping off its cars at the power plant and siding in Boulder. As a result, the Tacoma-Denver freight will be stopped at 63rd Street for about two hours to wait for the work to be completed.

This double stack (with a few auto racks thrown on the front) train left Tacoma, WA a week before this picture was taken. New Years Eve and New Years Day slowed all trains down a bit! The QTACDEN always runs with auto racks up front and double stack in the back. Of course a big, large cloud set over the area about 20 seconds before I snapped this shot!

There's about 15 minutes left before the sun will duck behind the mountains. After waiting a few hours for the Valmont empty to clear, the Denver to Laurel finally has a warrant to proceed north toward Longmont. Cars are pacing the train on the Diagonal here has three engines work to take the train north in the setting sun.

Northbounds are always hard to shoot on the Front Range Sub, but that problems tends to get worse in the winter months when the sun is further to the south. The sun is almost directly behind this Valmont empty as it makes its way north past 63rd Street along the Diagonal.

On the approach to MP 32 (and the 47th Street grade crossing), An ES44AC and a pair of SD70ACes have the northbound Valmont empty on the roll in Boulder.

Just north of Boulder, this HPASSAG (with a rather colorful consist) is getting close to the end of its warrant at MP 25. Fortunately, the southbound ahead of this train will roll up its warrant to MP 17, allowing this manifest to continue without stopping through Boulder.

The tracks along the Front Range Sub between Boulder and Longmont definitely move up a down quite a bit! Even though the Longmont Turn is clearly climbing a hill here, overall the tracks are going down an ruling 1.54% grade the rest of the way into Longmont.

Anytime I can get a shot that looks as though it could have been taken in the 1980's (or so), I'll jump at the chance! In this telephoto shot, you can see the Longmont Turn coming down a slight hill just north of Boulder. Foothills Parkway is the overpass just visible in the background.

It seems like more often then not, the Laurel to Denver (HLAUDEN) runs with two C44-9W's on the point and one DPU'd on the back. It's nice when "the norm" is broken every once in awhile...true, they are still all C44-9W's, but at least all three are on the point!

The southbound HLAUDEN is on the approach to Boulder, moving along at 20 MPH. The train is relatively short today, with only 39 cars. This curve is at the south end of the Diagonal, where CO-119 and Foothills Parkway merge. I particularly like the trees along the tracks to the right.

I can't stand it when railroads put helper units on the wrong way! True, it is completely irrelevant as far as the operation of the train goes, but I'd prefer to see a cab and not the tail end of a unit as the train is leaving me! Regardless, a single C44-9W helps push on the back of the HLAUDEN as it approaches Boulder with the Flatirons in the background.

The southbound HLAUDEN makes an early run south on the Front Range Sub. The train, just a bit south of 63rd Avenue in northern Boulder, will slow down drastically when it runs through the main parts of Boulder.
