A look down on the longest diesel locomotive ever constructed! UP 6936 is a DDA40X built in January 1971 and is just shy of 100ft in length. The unit was used as a backup (and for dynamic braking) on the Cheyenne Frontier Days train.

After a very brief stop in Greeley, UP 844 has the Cheyenne Frontier Days special rolling south again. After a long day in Cheyenne, passengers are enjoying the ride back to Denver.

Just south of Greeley, a northbound coal empty has a clear signal. The empty came from the Nixon power plant south of Colorado Springs. It'll load at the North Antelope mine in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.

In some ways, this shot is just about my favorite one of the entire day, chasing the Ski Train north on the Greeley Sub. So very representative of the train zooming away to new adventures in Canada.

Here it is! The very final shot that I'll (most likely) ever take of the entire Ski Train in the sunlight. Ironically, the train is just about as far away from Denver in this shot as it would be at Winter Park.

At the north end of Greeley, I got the "so long Ski Train, going away just before sunset" shot that I had been hoping for all day! Not much else to be said...

When I was a kid, my parents took me to Glenwood Springs all the time to swim as well as watch trains. That's probably why the Ski Train Glenwood Springs, seen here, is one of my favorites!

After an evening of clouds, the sun finally broke through the clouds about 20 minutes before sunset, offering this great shot with eerie storm clouds in the direct sunlight. The train is at the north end of Greeley, continuing north on a clear signal.

Not far north of La Salle and the Ski Train crosses over the South Platte River. Once again I conveniently cropped out the UP pilot leader!
