CN 3321, an AC44C6M (rebuild) crosses over East Plum Creek on the bridge at MP 26.60 on Main 1 on the Joint Line. The train is following a coal load, and is actually making better time than the coal load, so the grain train will make a few stops at (red) intermediate signals as it continues south.

Several storm clouds move toward the plains from the Rockies at 12:30pm as a southbound BNSF coal train crosses Clay Street in Sedalia on Main 1. These cloud build ups are very normal for summer afternoons along the Front Range in Colorado.

On the north edge of Sedalia, a BNSF coal load headed for Texas from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming snakes its way through several S-Curves. With more and more power plants in the country switching away from coal, how much longer will coal dominate the Joint Line?

At Sedalia, both Main 1 and Main 2 run more east/west than they do north/south. Here, heading almost due east, this southbound UP manifest is moving along at roughly 35 MPH, trying to get to Pueblo as soon as it can! The crew, fortunately, is on duty until 7pm, so there should be plenty of time to make the trip.

UP's daily North Yard, CO to Pueblo, CO manifest is southbound on Main 1, just north of Sedalia. The train, which usually heads south overnight, made a rare daylight appearance on the Joint Line today. A broken rail south of Littleton further delayed the train, but it is now making track speed! The three lumber cars you see in the train are going to be set out in the yard at Colorado Springs to be delivered by a yard job to a local company.

It is still rather amazing to me that in 2024, almost 30 years after the BN/ATSF merger, that there are still Warbonnet-painted units that are in relatively good condition! BNSF 789 is a great example. the red and silver are both still quite strong.

An ES44C4 and a Warbonnet C44-9W lead a JB Hunt Q-Train south at Sedalia. The train was built in Rennicks in Denver, and it is headed for Los Angeles. The train will head south to Amarillo, TX and join the BNSF Transcon to head west.

Now that is a long line of JB Hunt containers! A southbound BNSF Q-Train, headed for Los Angeles, is winding through some curves just on the north edge of Sedalia.

I remember seeing pictures of southbound coal train with solid sets of Oakway SD60s in the 1980s from this location. 40 years later, three CSX units (in two different schemes) and a Canadian Pacific unit lead a (UP) ethanol train southbound at the same location.

In between Sedalia and Orsa, a southbound BNSF J-Train (a special) rolls through an S-Curve. The train just crossed over East Plum Creek, or rather the dry creek bed as there currently is no water in the creek. The train, which includes new Department of Energy cars heading for the testing center near Avondale, CO.

Between Castle Rock and Sedalia, a BNSF northbound snakes its way along on Main 2, parallel to CO-85. The train has a straight shot the rest of the way in to Denver, where it will terminate.

BNSF 7654 and train are currently stopped on Main 1 in the small town of Sedalia, CO on the Joint Line. The train lost communication with the ETD (End of Train Device, sometimes referred to as a FRED). Consequently, the crew cannot tell if the air brakes on the train are working properly as they cannot see the amount of air in the brake line at the end of the train. After 45 minutes or so, the problem would be worked out, and the train would continue.

Sedalia is an unincorporated town along the Joint Line between Littleton and Castle Rock. As of the 2020 census, there were 177 residents in the town. Much of the town, including the "downtown" area, is actually located between Main 1 and Main 2 on the Joint Line. When there is a northbound and southbound passing through town simultaneously, the center part of town is cutoff (by car)! Here, a southbound crossing Manhart Avenue near the southeast side of town.
