At 3,960 feet, the siding of Shoshone is rarely used. The east end of Shoshone is separated by the west end of Allen by only a few hundred feet (and a tunnel). Rio Grande considered connecting Allen and Shoshone to create a stretch of two main tracks, but the expense of removing the tunnel proved to be too much to make it worth it. This eastbound manifest is at the west switch of Shoshone along the Colorado River. Prior to 1992, drivers in Glenwood Canyon passed this location on the two lane I-70. Once the expansion of I-70 to four lanes was completed (through the mountain behind the tracks, in this case), this area became a rest stop and access to the Glenwood Canyon trailhead. Because it is on the north side of the mountain, very little sunlight hits here, meaning the Colorado River is frozen over!
