There are actually two sidings at Glenwood Springs: The east siding and the west siding. In this shot, a string of hoppers (currently being stored) sits in the east siding while UP's Minturn Local sits in the west siding. The main track runs down the middle of the two. The Minturn Local (which, of course, hasn't actually gone to Minturn in nearly two decades, but still retains the name) will soon switch out some tank cars in the Glenwood Springs yard.

UP typically does not run a manifest between Roper, UT and North Yard, CO on Sundays. However, it seems there was enough traffic to demand it on the second third Sunday of 2016. A day later, the MRONYX (The "X" indicating it is an extra, unscheduled run of the train) heads west on the main at Grizzly about four miles east of Glenwood Springs.

One of the most awe-inspiring places in the world simply must be Glenwood Canyon. Even more so in winter when it is covered in snow. Amid the sheer rock walls and Colorado River, an eastbound manifest approaches a clear signal at the east switch of Grizzly.

This is a spot in Glenwood Canyon that I have never shot before. This eastbound manifest is at the west switch of Shoshone along the Colorado River. Prior to 1992, drivers in Glenwood Canyon passed this location on the two lane I-70. Once the expansion of I-70 to four lanes was completed (through the mountain behind the tracks, in this case), this area became a rest stop and access to the Glenwood Canyon trailhead. Because it is on the north side of the mountain, very little sunlight hits here, meaning the Colorado River is frozen over!

A single DPU brings up the tail end of an eastbound MRONYX (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO, Extra) at Shoshone in Glenwood Canyon. At 3,960 feet, the siding of Shoshone is rarely used. The east end of Shoshone is separated by the west end of Allen by only a few hundred feet (and a tunnel). Rio Grande considered connecting Allen and Shoshone to create a stretch of two main tracks, but the expense of removing the tunnel proved to be too much to make it worth it.

It is just after noon and the eastbound Zephyr is running right on time as it pulls up to the station in Glenwood Springs. There are a lot of people on the platform, most of whom are probably waiting to ride back to Denver. A lot of the business on the Zephyr comes between Denver and Glenwood Springs! And with today being MLK Day, there are likely even more people headed home after the three day weekend.

Having just stopped at the station in Glenwood Springs, the crew has the door on the (new) baggage car open and is ready to load (and, if necessary, unload) checked bags for passengers. The stop in Glenwood is actually quite efficient, and the train will start rolling within ten minutes or so.

After spending about three hours switching in the yard in Glenwood Springs, UP's Minturn Local is now headed east toward Tennessee Pass. Now that statement sounds far more exciting that it actually is. While most of Tennessee Pass is "railbanked" and out of service, about seven miles of the west end is still active. The stretch between Dotsero and Gypsum is still active, which is to say it sees one train a week: The Minturn Local. American Gypsum is a wallboard manufacturer located in Gypsum and they ship by rail. A (far less common than its AC brothers) C44-9W leads the local on the main at Grizzly.

A C44-9W (of Espee heritage...formerly SP 8120) and an SD40N (recently rebuilt by UP from an SD40-2) head east down the main at Grizzly in a snow-filled Glenwood Canyon. The train is headed for Gypsum (on the far west end of Tennessee Pass) where it will switch out American Gypsum, a wallboard plant.
