As the Rocky Mountaineer descends down the 2% grade on Main 1, it meets a quartet of UP units heading east on Main 2. Note the cut in the upper right corner of the train. This is where the Mountaineer was just a few minutes earlier.

Just west of Soldier Summit, the Rocky Mountaineer passes by a frozen pond as it starts its descent down the 2% grade. Despite being a week into spring, winter still has a bit of a grip here at the top of Soldier Summit.

The test run of the Rocky Mountaineer between Moab, UT and Salt Lake City, UT attracted a pretty good crowd on Soldier Summit. Several railfans photograph and record the train as it rolls across the grade crossing near the west end of Soldier Summit.

The Rocky Mountaineer has made it to the top of the final pass it will run over on the way west to Salt Lake City. The train is roughly 7,470 feet (2,277 meters) above Sea Level and is still on Main 1. The siding at Soldier Summit is located alongside Main 1. There are crossovers at either end of Soldier Summit, so trains on Main 2 could crossover to access the siding as well.

I know it is only a matter of time before these signals at the west end of Soldier Summit are replaced. Probably not much time at that! That will be a sad day as they are such staples of this location. UR 5005 leads three sister MK50-3s and an SD50 down Main 2.

Amtrak 6 is running about four hours late, which allows this shot to be possible! At this time of year, if Amtrak was running on time, it would be pitch black when Amtrak came through Summit.
