Colton is the location where the Pleasant Valley Subdivision (which runs 21 miles to the Skyline Mine) breaks off from the mainline. Here, a westbound coal load has passed the branch line, running the "wrong way" on main two.

After stopping at the west end of Soldier Summit to be crossed over from main two to main one, this eastbound coal empty is starting to accelerate. The train is actually a Utah Railway coal train, using leased UP power on the point.

This train is progressing down the 0.68% grade just east of Colton. Note that the train is not following the right-hand rule, running the "wrong way" on main one.

Although this coal empty has Union Pacific power, it is not a UP coal train. This is actually a Utah Railway coal train, heading for the Wildcat mine on the Utah Railway mainline. Notice the jointed rail!

This Utah Railway coal train is just starting under the coal tipple at the Wildcat coal mine. The coal train will proceed at a grueling 2 MPH while it loads it 80+ car coal train. The entire process will probably take about two hours.

This eastbound coal load is on the move at the crossover of Rio. This crossover was installed by the Rio Grande after the mudslide of 1983 permanently closed the Thistle crossover.

A broken air hose has caused this train to go into emergency just short of South Main Street in Springville, UT. Although the train is not moving, the crossing signals are still warning people that a train is near.

The original manager of operations of the Rio Grande would be rolling over in his grave if he knew about this one! This coal empty is actually tied down on main one between the crossovers of Ironton and Springville. The crew stopped the train and manually applied the handbrake on the engines and several hoppers before a bus came and picked the up. DS-78 now has only one mainline to work with between Ironton and Springville.
