Five minutes before 7am finds a westbound BNSF coal load, headed for Valmy, NV, slowly climbing the grade in the canyon between Rollins and Tolland. The sun has technically broken the horizon, but has not yet peeked over the mountains.

East of Tolland along South Boulder Creek, an eastbound UP oil train snakes along the river amidst a lot of coniferous pine trees and a handful of bright yellow deciduous trees, well on their way to shedding their leaves for winter.

The Continental Divide still sports quite a bit of snow on the top of it and it lies dead ahead for the westbound Zephyr. Just east of the east switch of Tolland, the Zephyr is clear (green) signals all the way up to and through the Moffat Tunnel.

About 46 miles west of Denver, the westbound Zephyr is right on time as it crosses over South Boulder Creek. You could not ask for a more beautiful Memorial Day morning.

The landscape opens up a bit at (and just west of) Tolland. The westbound Zephyr passes underneath the "shifted load" detector - also sometimes referred to as a "high/wide" detector - just west of Tolland at MP 48. The Zephyr is currently under one of many slow orders, keeping its speed down to about 15 MPH.

The sun is getting low and is getting somewhat obscured by clouds, casting some crazy shadows as the Zephyr rolls east across South Boulder Creek just east of Tolland.

Tolland Road and the track both follow South Boulder Creek in between Rollins and Tolland. The road is on the south side of the creek and the track are on the north side. The Zephyr is moving at track speed, running on clear signals as it heads west. The first train it will see is a BNSF manifest currently at Yarmony!

Somebody grab a rag and a bottle of soap! Most engines these days don't generally get super dirty, largely thanks to cleaner emissions. However, that certainly doesn't mean they never get dirty.

The skies to the west were mostly cloud-covered (over the divide), but a few pockets of blue sky were floating around. I was lucky enough to have one hit just as this westbound BNSF sand train came rolling by on the approach to a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal at East Tolland.

Three SD70ACes lead this westbound loaded sand train through the canyon between Rollins and Tolland. The second and third units are so dirty, they are great 21st century representatives of Grande and Espee units from 40 years ago! That'll happen when you are only making 7-10 MPH through the tunnels in the Tunnel District!

For those interested, note that I recorded some sound of these guys pulling...you can listen to them from this page.

Every once in awhile, a visitor from south of the border makes its way up north for a little power sharing. Such is the case here as a Ferromex ES44AC rolls west on the Moffat just east of Tolland.
