Wallace (NKCR) Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado
Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado has a rather interesting way to operate. Because there is so much switches that the train does as it makes its way along the line, the engineer rides in the engine alone. The conductor parallels the train in a pickup truck! This way, the conductor can drive to any switches that need to be thrown, rather than having to walk along the train. You can see the pickup on the highway, driving alongside the train as it heads toward Holyoke, CO for its next switch job.

The head end of this westbound Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado train crosses the border from Nebraska into Colorado. The train will shortly come to a stop as it is switching out an industry that is actually in Nebraska. The "Welcome to Colorful Colorado" sign is a little worse for ware!

The small town of Venango, NE only has about 150 residents. The town is located right on the border with Colorado. A westbound Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado manifest is pulling toward the border, preparing to stop to pick up a few cars from Helena Agri-Enterprises.

With winds often in excess of 40 MPH, it was a rather interesting weather day on the plains. The high winds blew out some of the overcast skies of the morning. Additionally, the winds kept my drone grounded for much of a day. It was rather nice using a DSLR trackside for some shots of this interesting short line operation. Here, a pair of SD40s leads a westbound NKCR manifest between Brandon and Venango.
