Amtrak 5 is running about 20 minutes late as it clips along at 40 MPH on BNSF's Brush Sub just east of Denver. Even though it is only 7:35am, it is already over 70 degrees out…its going to be a warm day!

After a 25 minute stop in Denver, Amtrak 5 is on the move between DS 004 (Pecos St Crossover) and DS 005 (C&S Jct). The train is running on clear signals on Main 3, about to pass underneath the I-76 overpass. Note the family of geese running for the clear on the right side of the picture!

With a diverging clear signal ahead at C&S Junction, Amtrak will accelerate as it leave four tracks behind (North Yard Siding, Main 3, [Bypass] Main 2, [Bypass] Main 1 from left to right) in favor of the single track Moffat Main ahead.

Recently Union Pacific reinstated the MNYRO/MRONY between North Yard and Roper. It looks like this move is justified too as UP 3843 heads up three units on a ~5,000 foot MRONY-19 through Crescent. The MRONY has been affectionately referred to as the "Macaroni".

UP SD70M (Phase II) #3843 is a great leader on the MRONY-19 with wings and a clean flag! The train has 12,800 horses (two DC-powered, and one AC-powered) on the ~5,000 foot manifest. Another year or two and those trees will (unfortunately) obscure the view of the mainline.

The HLAUDEN from Friday (5/20) was tied down in the hole at Broomfield, and was still sitting there Saturday afternoon. The power was very unique (and very colorful) with BNSF SD40-2 #7027 in Heritage 1, CSX B36-7 #5867 in Gray, and EMDX GP38-2 #745 in Blue.

A very rare engine indeed in 2005 is a classic General Electric "U-Boat". Built in the 1970's, CSX is one of the only class one railroads to still have active U-Boats on the roster. One of these rare units, CSX B36-7 #5867, made an appearance in Colorado on the MLAUDEN. At the time of this photo, the 5867 was one of 87 B36-7's still on CSX's roster (in the number range 5807-5925).
