After a brief crew change at the grade crossing at Crescent, UP 7194 (the CMSEY) starts rolling west. After entering the unit, the crew initially forgot to close the nose door!

The sun is starting to inch its way toward the western horizon as this eastbound coal load approaches the west switch of Leyden, about to cross over the bridge over Indiana Street.

Over the past few years, UP has slowly been replacing the signals along the former Grande. That means that the old D&SL signals are becoming more and more rare. New UP signals have been installed at west Leyden, although they have not yet been activated yet. Time grows short for the old D&SL signals!

Even though it is almost June in Colorado, never under estimate Colorado weather! A cold front is starting to seep over the divide and the clouds are starting to gather. In the mean time, UP 6590 heads up an eastbound coal train (with unpatched SP 257) crossing a very full South Boulder Creek just east of Tolland.

A short-time eastbound coal train ("short-time" meaning the crew is close to their 12-hour work limit) was passing through Tabernash when this westbound got to Rollins. Due to the fact that the eastbound needed to make it to Plain in order to change crews, UP 5610 got stuck waiting in the siding at Rollins for 45 minutes. Looks like the number on the cab and flag on the long hood have both recently received a cleaning!

Now that UP has again started running the MNYRO/MRONY (Manifest trains between North Yard and Roper), manifest trains are becoming more common on the Moffat. In fact, on this particular Saturday, the MNYRO-28 met the MRONY-26 at Cliff. Not only was coal completely missing from the scene, but so was the sound of a four-stroke engine! The eastbound MRONY had two SD70M's, an SD40-2, and a patched SP SD40M-2 for power. The westbound had four SD70M's and they were working hard. Here is the MNYRO approaching the west end of the siding.

A very heavy MNYRO works it way west through the canyon between Rollins and Tolland. Four SD70M's (UP 4152, UP 4390, UP 4422, UP 4772) provided the power for the train. The first three units are Phase-I SD70M's with wings and the lightning bolt scheme. The fourth unit is a Phase-II SD70M with wings, flags, and flared radiators.
