Moffat Tunnel (UP) Union Pacific, Rio Grande
With the old signals for the days of the Rio Grande quickly disappearing, it seemed that a night shot was in order! Just a few minutes past midnight, the signal at the west end of Rollins gives a clear indication for a eastbound MPVNY which has just exited the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel.

For those of you that are familiar with some of your constellations may recognize Orion looking down upon the signal at the west end of Rollins! A full moon offers some illumination on the side of the control box. The green signal is for an eastbound MPVNY which is on the approach to Tolland.

There is a lot to take in here in this late night shot at Crescent. Along the right of way in the distance, the trees are lit by the headlight of the eastbound MPVNY. The ghost image of the train streaks past and the flashing lights of the crossing cast a red glow on the ground. And, of course, there is also the blinking FRED on the back of the train!

Most Rio Grande railfans have probably seen a picture from this location before, but probably not quite like this! At this location, you can get a nice shot of the front as well as the middle of a train (in the case of a coal train, anyway). Here is a shot from the same location in the day. Here, however, we see the train from front to back and then some! Light from the lead units wraps through the curves up toward tunnel one. The ghost of the train, as well as the FRED, follow up behind!

Yard Shots Union Pacific, Rio Grande
UP 1445 - formerly DRGW 3129 - moves slowly through the yard tracks of 36th street alongside UP 2002. I like that the two units that are the focus of this shot are both owned by UP, but neither has much yellow on them.
