The HDENLAU has a very colorful consist for the day as it approaches the south siding switch of Broomfield. At Broomfield, the train will clear up in the siding to meet the southbound QPASSAG, which was between Boulder and Broomfield.

The snow is falling hard as this eastbound coal train passes the detector at MP 22.6. Through the snow, you can see the train wrap through the S-Curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

And to think that just 48 hours ago, it was close to 70 degrees out! Now, the detector reports that it is a mere 18 degrees as the snow lightly falls on this eastbound coal load. The train would have clear signals all the way into town on this Thanksgiving-eve.

I'm always trying to look for new and different locations to shoot at. This one came to mind this afternoon! The eastbound coal load is crossing over Kipling Street just miles away from North Yard. Note the classic Rio Grande signals - some of the last between Denver and East Portal - on either side of the track.

Seeing how these old signals are quickly on their way out, I wanted to make sure I got a shot of them before they inevitably disappear. In the pre-UP era, that lower target on the signal on the right would display a lunar aspect, indicating a grade (restricting) signal. Today, the yellow G-Plate has been added (indicating a grade signal), and the lower target displays yellow, for a yellow-over-yellow aspect, if a train is going in the hole at Leyden (Approach Diverging).
