The crew for this coal empty (the CPASM-06) were called at 2am for the train. Six hours later, the train is sitting at Leyden (due to a pulled draw bar on the MNYGJ a few miles ahead). The crew ended up dying right here, rolling a total of about 9 miles over 12 hours!

This shot came very close to not being possible on this particular day! Due to problems with the MNYGJ, Amtrak 5 almost went via Wyoming. In fact, it had already departed the station headed for the Greeley Sub when the word came down that they should run west. For the first time in history (as far as I know), Amtrak ran via the Belt to get to the Moffat! Here it is, running about 30 minutes late, at east Leyden.

The sole DPU unit on the back end of this westbound coal empty sits in the morning cold. It is clear, but it is only 20 degrees outside. The icicles hanging down from the anti-climber are starting to melt away!

The MNYPV-12 had a fantastic lash-up on it on this cold December morning. Four SD70Ms split in the middle by a C44-9W, running elephant style. A fair amount of snow is being kicked up as the train has a clear signal at east Leyden.

A very rare train was rerouted over the Moffat (whereas it would normally run through Wyoming). A baretable intermodal (the IOADVR) came from Oakland, CA running through the Utah desert and over the Moffat. Here, the train waits for the West Local while sitting in the hole at Rocky.

A look down the long stretch of empty well cars on the rerouted baretable IOADVR. It took the train almost twelve hours to get from the Moffat Tunnel to Rocky! The primary reason was due to the MNYGJ, which broke a draw bar early in the morning. The other reason is that, well, baretables are just about the lowest priority train on the railroad! Note the last unit on an eastbound coal load coming through Clay is just barely visible in the upper left corner of the shot.
