Severe weather in Iowa and Nebraska had a serious impact on the westbound California Zephyr! Between Osceola, IA and Creston, IA (a distance of 33 miles), the train lost five hours. Between Creston and Fort Morgan, CO, the train lost another six hours. All said, it was over 12 hours late getting into Denver. Here, the train is approaching Sand Creek at 7:15pm.

A single UP employee works with his belt pack to remotely control UPY 577 and switch some covered hoppers into Yard Track 11. This is model railroading on a 1:1 scale!

Yard Shots Amtrak
On this day, Amtrak 5 was running 12 1/2 hours late due to poor weather in the mid-west. Here, after 8:00pm, the head end of the westbound Zephyr is approaching the diamond at 23rd Street. In the distance, on the left side of the picture, note the eastbound Zephyr (running a few minutes late), preparing to back into Union Station. (Apologies for the grainy look, but it was getting very dark and I was at a high ISO!)

Amtrak 5, the westbound California Zephyr, is running 12 1/2 hours late as it heads west out of Denver. The train has a clear signal as it approaches the signal bridge at C&S Junction. The last bit of light is quickly fading in the western sky.
