Five, count them five swing helpers were cut into the middle of this eastbound coal load. Most coal trains on the Moffat have three mid-train swing helpers on them. This train has eight units on it overall. A 2x5x1 configuration.

The last DPU on a eastbound coal load moves away from the camera on the main on the right as a westbound coal empty slowly starts to pull west out of the siding on the left.

UP runs a manifest between North Yard and Phippsburg at least a couple of times a week. The majority of the train typically consists of covered hoppers and this day was no exception. The hoppers carry industrial sand headed for a company in Craig, CO.

Not far west of North Yard, a westbound coal empty starts making its way toward a mine on the Craig branch. The track on the right side is BNSF's Golden Sub, which is used daily by two "Beer Trains" as well as the Golden Switch.

What kind of train is this you ask? It is a special train designed to carry the solid rocket boosters used by NASA on the space shuttle! The train came from Florida and is on its way to Clearfield, UT.

How's this for an interesting looking car? The roll bars that have been welded to the car are used to determine clearance. This is part of the "rocket train", which is used to transports the solid rocket boosters used by NASA. This car ensures the train has the proper clearance.

Need a boost? This is a specially designed car used to transport the solid rocket boosters used by NASA on the space shuttle! The cars on this train are not loaded with boosters; they are returning to Utah to pick up a new load.

This "rocket train" is headed west to Utah in order to get a new solid rocket booster for NASA. These ten cars are sufficient for transporting two boosters.

A few miles west of UP's 36th Street Yard, a "rocket train" passes by one of the smaller yards used on the Limon Sub to spot cars set for industries. The rocket train has a fresh crew and is headed for the Greeley Sub, the Overland Route, and eventually, Clearfield, UT.

A westbound coal empty continues its long trek toward the mine it'll load at. While most empties on the Moffat load on either the Craig Branch or the North Fork Branch, this empty will load at the Savage mine just outside Price, UT...across the Utah desert!

As a westbound coal empty rolled by me, I started looking at things to take pictures of. This shot caught my eye...a wheel from an empty hopper quickly rolls over the railhead of a 136-pound rail forged in 1979 at Colorado Fuel & Iron! Would enjoy hearing what you think of this somewhat "artsy" shot.

The last shot of the day for this day! As I was headed for home with the kids, we were pacing the train, going about 30 miles per hour. I slowed the shutter a bit, held the camera up with one hand, pointed out the (open) passenger side window, and hopped for a good shot! This was the sharpest shots I got in which I had the entire unit.
