Just north of the north switch of Platteville, this rerouted double stack train is holding at a double red. The dispatcher isn't quite sure where the he is going to make a meet, so the train must wait!

At the south switch of Hazeltine, this double stack stops to wait for a bit as the dispatcher has no other place to put them! The train usually runs across the Overland Route through Wyoming into Nebraska, but a derailment in Emmett, KS has resulted in the train being rerouted. The train originated in Oakland, CA and is headed for Memphis, TN.

Once UP completes the addition of a second main track in Arvada, this shot will likely never happen again. BNSF's Golden Sub, which the Beer Run uses to reach Coors, is visible to the right. However, due to that track being out of service further east (and continuing the "reroute" theme from the day), the Beer Run is currently using the Arvada Siding and crossing over halfway through the siding to the Golden Sub. Here, an all-coal Beer Run is entering the Arvada Siding with the main to the left.

When I heard this train calling the dispatcher, they were using BNSF 697 to identify themselves. I immediately figure that meant a Warbonnet was leading. Alas, the Warbonnet led eastbound, but the crew kept the same number for the trip back west toward Golden. You can see the Warbonnet second out in this shot.

Of course, the sun that had been out all day went behind the single cloud in the sky just as this all-coal version of the Beer Run approached me at Garrison Street in Arvada.

Labor Day finds this westbound coal empty sitting in the siding at Mesa. A zone crew has just untied the train and is preparing to take it in to North Yard for a power swap. Currently, the train is being led by an ES44AC, which is somewhat unusual for UP coal trains in Colorado.

Before continuing to the yard, however, the train must first wait for two eastbounds to come by before departing.

This grain train proceeds east on the main at Mesa after departing Sable with a fresh crew. The train is actually a reroute that is running through Colorado due to a derailment in Emmett, KS. The train originated in Milford, UT and is headed for Salina, KS.

In the late 1990's, UP had 10 AC4400CW's on lease from GECX. The units were numbered GECX 4000-4009. The units wore UP colors, but instead of "Union Pacific" on the long hood, they had "GECX". The units were ultimately purchased by UP and put in the roster. They wound up as UP 7000-7009. Here, you can see the number "7" patched on the cab over the "4" on UP 7008.

With the addition of UP 7008, I've managed to shoot four out of the ten ex-GECX units to date.

Where does the time go? Seems like just yesterday the AC4400CW was one of the newest things on the rails! Now, UP 7008 represents a unit that is nearly 20 years old while the truly newest representative from General Electric, the ES44AC, sits in the siding at Mesa.

After nearly four hours of waiting around town, this KOAMN double stack has finally received a track warrant into the siding at Sable. Once in the siding, the crew will tie down and an inspection team will come and give the train a 1000 mile inspection.

The double stack on the right has just cleared the derail (in the foreground) and will be coming to a stop soon. The conductor from the coal empty at the left will take care of aligning the switch at west Sable to the main and setting the derail to the "derail" position.

The Limon Sub doesn't typically play host to intermodal traffic. However, a derailment in Emmett, KS has resulted in the KOAMN being rerouted through Denver on its journey from Oakland, CA to Memphis, TN. Here, the train is stopped in the siding at Sable.
