In the pre-dawn light, a southbound manifest sits north of 124th Avenue at Henderson. DS-86 has informed the crew that they will meet a northbound at Hazeltine, but the northbound won't be ready to depart for about an hours. The train won't fit in the siding at Hazeltine without blocking crossing, so here it will sit!

It is just after 7am as we take a look at the silhouette of an SD70M sitting in the rapidly-rising sun.

One last look at this southbound sitting in the morning sun. About five minutes after taking this shot, the train would start pulling south to meet the northbound which was now on its way out of Denver. The two trains would meet at Hazeltine.

A UP northbound is passing underneath I-76 as it approaches a yellow signal at the south end of Hazeltine. The train is 7,200 feet long, but a pair of AC4400CW's is all that is needed to traverse the relatively light grade of the Greeley Sub.

This northbound manifest is moving at close to track speed (45 MPH) as it heads down the mainline at Brighton. A bit of dust is getting kicked up along the right of way.

A southbound manifest from Green River, WY holds the main at Platteville. It is waiting for the arrival of a northbound (that will run through the siding) before continuing south to Denver.

This is my favorite picture of the day! A pair of AC4400CW's lead up a northbound manifest on the approach to La Salle. In this 300mm shot, the 14,259-foot-tall Longs Peak stands tall in the distance.

This northbound is crossing 10th Street in Greeley, passing right next to the Greeley Freight Station Museum. If you haven't visited the museum and get the chance to in the future, I highly recommend going. It is an amazing experience. The mainline on the HO layout is 28 scale miles long.

It is late afternoon as this southbound (empty) rail train sits in the siding at La Salle. The train has already met one northbound and will have to wait for two more before continuing south.

Talk about quick turnaround! Although you can't tell from the pictures alone, these two units are the same two I shot at dawn at Henderson. Apparently, the power was serviced quickly and kicked right back out of town!

Despite the "nose only a mother could love", I have to admit that the SD70ACe is really starting to grow on me. It'll never replace such units as the SD40-2 or even the SD70M, but it not too shabby!
