In this shot, you can really see the grade that trains pull up as they enter Leyden from the east. On this Leap Morning, the westbound MNYRO has no problem pulling up the grade with a trio of GE's for power.

The early morning sun really made this picture scream "black and white". The MNYRO enters the main at Leyden on an Approach (yellow) signal. The train will hold at the west end to wait for an eastbound coal load just coming around Big Ten Curve at the time this picture was taken.

After meeting the MNYRO (which you can just barely see at the left side of the picture), this eastbound coal train is slowly pulling in to the clear toward a red signal at the east end of the siding.

Although you'd never know it just from this picture, the lead unit on the this coal load used to look very different. Until May 7, 2006, this was SP 354. On this day, it is leading this coal load east past the derail at Leyden...the train was too long to clear the west switch without pulling past the derail!

After arriving in Denver an hour late, the Amtrak crews worked fast and got the Zephyr out of town only 15 minutes late. Here, the train is knocking down a clear signal at the east end of Leyden on its journey west. The signal here at east Leyden is one of only three sets of signals between Utah Junction and East Portal that have not been replaced by UP yet. The other two being Utah Junction itself (on the signal bridge) and the intermediates at Kipling. The intermediate's days are numbered too as a new signal is already in place once the new two main track project is completed.
