This scene has changed quite a bit since February 26th. The old Arvada siding has been ripped out (the old switch is laying on the ground in this shot) and the rails and ties for the future Main 2 have been laid. Ballast is the next thing needed for Main 2. Meanwhile, a BNSF manifest heads east at track speed through the work zone.

BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest passes by one of the track gangs currently working on completing the new Main 2 at Sheridan Blvd. Old, discarded track from the old Arvada Siding is laying on the ground at bottom left. Moving up, we see BNSF's Golden Sub, the newly laid and ballasted Arvada Siding, future Main 2 and the train itself on future Main 1 (currently still just the "Main Track").

Just north of Fort Lupton, the ZLADV one of the engines on the train made for a nice treat! While it unfortunately was not leading, UP 2002, wearing special paint for the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake, looked great in the setting sun.

We are getting very close to the fields around town getting nice a green. For now, the ZLADV passes by a still-mostly brown field with UP 2002 second up in the consist. The Z-Train had eight auto racks up front, but the rest of the train was trailers and containers.

The highest priority train on the Greeley Sub has clear signals for the rest of the trip in to town. Here, the train passes underneath the E-470 tollway a few miles north of Hazeltine.

Not long ago, UP replaced the white frame stripe on UP 2002 with a yellow frame strip. Several years ago, the FRA decided to mandate that all engines have either a yellow frame stripe or a white frame stripe. Personally, I wish UP 2002 had kept its white frame stripe.

It had been nearly 5 1/2 years since I last shot one of the two Olympic units! November of 2006 was the last time I saw UP 2002 when it led a manifest down the Greeley Sub. It's been over six years since I saw sister unit, UP 2001.

UP has a high-wide detector on the Moffat west of North Yard to ensure the entire train will fit through all the tunnels. The detector was once located at MP 6, but was moved east to MP 5.5 when the Arvada Siding was built. Well, it has been moved again, seen here at MP 8.4. It had to be moved again to accommodate the construction of the second main track between C&S Junction and Arvada.

Have you seen the new self-propelled hoppers that don't require a crew or an engine? Okay, April Fools! But I thought a nice shot of the sun reflecting off the sides of these empty hoppers was a great way to finish up the day.
